If you put your foot down on the bike test, is that an instant fail?

If it is do you only get one chance at it or does your examiner give you another go?

Cheers

You can dab your foot but if its deemed you are not in control you will fail. So best not to!

Believe it's a fail, like touching the a kurb in the car test.

Just keep the revs up! Thumbs Up

What Strag said, I know people who have dabbed and got away with it, but it's down to the examiner to decide the line between in control and not, easiest to not put your foot down at all but if you do, don't panic, all is not automatically lost.

A bit worried! I am petrified of this "have to do manouvre" in my test, if I fail it will be this for sure. Sometimes I can do it sometimes I cant, just depends.
Why oh why does it have to be done, yea, yea, I know its to show you have balance and control of your bike but even so, when are you really gonna do a U turn that often.
It would be nice if you got another go on your test but I believe you only get the one chance Sad

i dont get it still tho. did my test and passed blah blah blah

but my bike has the turning circle of a train and will NOT get round an average road Laughing well, unless you go round on full lock, but the catch is i cant use the throttle so i walk it round whilst on it...then reverse it back and ride off Laughing

yeah any way

Dont put your foot down! fail

You only get 1 chance. also on the walk it round (standing beside you bike) make sure you go over the top on observations. least thats what i was told Thumbs Up

dont forget to look where you intend to go, look right up the road dont look at the curb or close to the bike as this will affect your balance, if you do dab your foot ask the examoner if you can do it again, he can only say no , but you wont know if you dont ask do you

When I go out on a lesson my instructor stands on the other side of the road up a bit and tells me to just look at him, the bike will follow....apparently. Me being me will certainly suggest a re try if I dont get it first time, what have I to lose eh.

You answered the question yourself really. They get you to do it because it is bloody difficult. It involves fine control of the throttle, clutch and brake along with a good sense of balance. Doing a U-turn shows you have mastered the controls on the bike.

As you progress, you will find that you do use the 'slow riding' technique they want in the u-turn quite a bit, especially in slow moving/stop-starting traffic. It becomes easier to just keep the bike rolling at a very slow pace rather than stopping and starting all the time.

I can U-turn all of my bikes, although I have to stick my knees out on the H100 or I hit them with the handlebars.

None of my pupils have ever passed if they have put a foot down during the U turn, it is seen as loss of control.

To be honest very few fail for this reason as i make them practise fig 8s so much that the U turn which is much easier to do is not a problem, i also make them do all there training in much narrower roads than they will use on there tests.

keep practising Very Happy

i would disagree i would say its a fine control of the clutch, rev the engine higher dont worry about the noise it means nothing if it gets u a pass. u can spend time later fine tunin it but the real progress would be for the pass mark a test is really a guide the real trainin comes from u in time with practice.

Me, like a prat, stalled just as I pulled up as I finished my U turn but thankfully I passed, it's probably been said but practice, pratice and practice some more thats all I did took myself off to narrow quiet roads and made myself complete the turn. I only had two mornings with an instructor before my test, hadn't been on a bike previous to that for 17 years and passed with 4 minors. Just ride confidently and you'll be fine. Good luck Thumbs Up

the u turn on your test is easy(unless you choose to do it on a sport bike or a cruiser)the usual test bikes will u turn in a single parking space,so any road is easy.
however i found my u turns really hard, foot down 80% of times untill i made a silly error on my emergency stop(something i had never had any problems with)so my instructor started moaning at me for that.so while i was thinking about emergency stops i suddenly did a u turn with no bother.
i found that the reason for my failure to u turn was that i was over thinking the job.once my mind was on the next task the u turn became and still is easy.
passed first time Smile

Only thing i can say is try not to lean the bike too much, and if you think you'r going to fall over dont panic. Also if you snap the throttle, you'll loose your balance. My personal preferance is to use the clutch alot, keep it at low revs. It might be a different technique from what they look for though, ive never acctually had training yet Embarassed

I hear faired bikes are a pain in the arse for U turns. Thats alright for me though, the RD is a U turn machine, does them so easy. Guess its the rider as well though. Very Happy

I couldn't u turn the cbr 125 at all, couldn't u turn the 6 until I was at dublin port and the port police asked me to move the bike, "just go down there and turn" it's amazing what you can do when a copper tells you to. Laughing

I was u-turning fine on my cbt. I was on a gs125, and it was really a piece of cake.

When I got my 125, a marauder, I couldnt do it at all. I keep going off to an industrial estate to get some practice in - get it to second and use the back brake.

I dont know about using the clutch... how would that help :/

You can drop the revs right off without stalling the engine, falling over and looking a right arsehole, it also gives you finer speed control. Overall, its just the best way of doing it IMO

The idea is that you keep the revs reasonably high, slip the clutch and use the back brake to control your speed. If you don't do this on your test u-turn, the examiner will make you do a 'slow ride' exercise. This is where he walks along the pavement dead slowly and you ride alongside him without touching the front brake or putting a foot down. He will walk slowly enough so you have to slip the clutch.

If you are asked to do a slow ride, it unoficially means he wasn't entirely happy with your u-turn but is giving you another chance to make up for it. Officially it means you haven't had the oppertunity to demonstrate your slow speed bike control on the rest of the test.
