Hi folks.

I'm riding a Honda NSR125F at the moment and am hoping to do my direct access in a couple of months. I am very interested in getting a Kawasaki ZXR400 but would like to know the pro's and con's so I can decide if it is for me. Which model?

Cue another 400cc bike debate.

The ZXR remained mostly unchanged from the early 90s right up to 2003/4 (someone correct me) when the bike stopped being officially sold in the UK. So it comes down to finding the tidiest/best running version for your budget. Plus you get to pick and choose which colour you like the best.

As they were sold officially, you don't need to worry as much about grey import factors; which is usually nothing more than parts availability (not an issue when you know where to look) and kph speedos (which include a 180kph restriction).

Other than that, I can't think of any better way to find out than to get out there and start trying some out. Only area of concern that sometimes gets a mention (which I've noticed on this forum) is the cam chain. Other than that, if well kept, they should be as realiable as any other Jap. bike.

Pros

Relatively cheaper insurance, handy for younger riders.

Good handling, controllable power.

Cons

As they are getting older and older, good examples are probably getting harder to find, but as ZXRs were officially imported, parts shouldnt be a problem.

As mentioned earlier, camchains can be a weakness, but easily sorted. I don't think its too expensive either.

Two ZXR models, H and L, L being the most modern.

L has the more modern shape and probably the most availiable parts as they had at least 9 years of production, whereas I think the H only had 2.

if your doing your DAS perhaps get a 600cc?

Doubt a nice one will be any more expensive and insurance cant be too much depending on your age. Thumbs Up

My ZXR4 is still better than me in the twisties. Needs a little engine work but hey.
