PostPosted: 18:18 - 06 Nov 2005    Post subject: IoM TT 2006 - Advice needed [HELP!] Reply with quote

There's a few of us looking at going to the TT next (probably over a long weekend). None of us have been before, so I'm looking for advice from people who known or have been before.

I know the Steam Packet Company goes from Liverpool and Heysham (although only seems to go from Liverpool a fraction of the times it goes from Heysham) and I got an online quote of £20 which seems very cheap. Do they provide tie-downs, a way of securing bikes etc? Or do you spend the entire crossing clutching your bike so that it doesn't fall over?! Laughing

Obviously accommodation is going to be the hardest thing as I hear everywhere gets booked very quickly. Camping may the way forward, but we'll see.

Dates for next year seem to be 27th May to 9th June. Apparently Mad Sunday is on the 4th June, so we'll have to give that a shot (with the camcorder connected of course!). I see the Superbikes are on the 3rd and the Superstocks on the 5th. Anyone recommend anything in particular to see (apart from the stunters and naked girls in Douglas at night! Twisted Evil )

All advice welcomed, thanks!

EDIT: Recommended (not too crowded) viewing points would be good too!

I've got a Wales trip booked around that time. I'm sure they wouln't have been stupid enough to clash it with the IOM but i'll check the dates to be sure.

As long as it doesn't clash, you can count me in for definite.
And im the sort of person that keeps to these things!

Used to go to the TT every year....looking forward to going again in 2007.....TT's 100th anniversary. I would really start looking for accomodation pretty soon though as most people as they are leaving book again for the next year. Camping is an option that I have tried and there are some well setup campsites with shower blocks and there are others where it's just a field with no amenities whatsoever...again you pays your money you takes your choice.

I'm planning on going next year, although i've not started planning.
£20 does seem very cheap though.

Would be good to meet up if/when we are over there.

Anyway, back on topic, advise please. Smile

MATE!

The £20 is just the deposit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will have to pay a further £140 before the end of February!
(ie £160 total)

I have been 4 times now and can't wait for the next time!!!!!!

Your bikes are all tied down properly, along with the 500 odd other bikes too. Its such a great atmosphere and im excited just thinking about it!

Hope this helps

John

FWIW I was advised that the ferry company ups its prices for the TT.

Was also told that if you want to experience the racing but without the hassle and extra cost of the TT go to the Manx Grand Prix, 19 August to 1 September 06. Apparently a good atmosphere and good racing.

I'd expect forget it for the TT if you want any sort of B&B accommodation. Need to go camping if you want a place for the night.

HTH Thumbs Up

When I was looking at the ferry prices a couples years back the buggers were charging more for a bike than a van in TT week Rolling Eyes

There's a reason they're often referred to as the 'steam racket' company.. not like you've got a choice though Sad

Ah yes, the good ol' Steam Racket.....If you haven't already, book your ferry now. £20 is the deposit, you'll get an invoice about Jan/Feb next year for the remainder. Prices do tend to go up for TT unfortunately. There tend to be extra sailings laid on from both Heysham and Liverpool during the busy period, and there are more sailings from Liverpool anyway in the summer.

Accommodation is a nightmare to get (cheap hotels/B&B's etc) unless you book a year in advance. A lot of people find a good B&B and book for the next year when they're doing the TT. There are loads of campsites though, many with good facilities, and right next to the TT course too. Now they've stopped morning practice, you may even get a lie-in!! Laughing

Your bike will get tied down on the ferry, but check over it before you ride it off, just to be on the safe side.

Most viewing places will be busy, but if you can get to the really good spots early then you'll be fine. Bear in mind that certain places you'll be stuck in while the roads are closed.

On the up side, the TT is an experience you must have in your life. It's totally addictive and you may find the rest of your year is centred round how you're gonna get back next year!! The place is like nothing on earth, just absolutely fantastic.

Her are a few links which should give you more information. There are a few forums on some of these sites too, so you may be able to get more advice and look for accommodation to.

www.ttwebsite.com
www.iomtt.com
www.realroadracing.com

By TT next year, I'll be living back there (and kipping on a mate's sofa, so sorry, no accommodation to offer!), so I may see some fellow BCF-ers there!

So the bit of advice I get from that is get some mates together, get a van, stick the bikes in the back and go across cheaper than doing it individually Question

If so, sounds like a good move Thumbs Up

Lots of people have started doing that now. If it's cheaper, then why not!!! Thumbs Up

Edit: I think they'll put a van on a weigh bridge for the ferry, and I'm pretty sure the weight limit for a standard Transit is 3t. 2 or 3 bikes in the back shouldn't even come close, though.

Ditto, I'd love to go too. When I first read this thread, I knew you were a keen trackdayer, I thought you were planning on entering!

When I went this year there were a lot of people saying that there would be no more mad sundays. Is this the case? Have they put the new speed limits in place yet? I love the Isle of Mann. It really is the best track in the world. I hope they don't fuck it up for us all.

There is talk of an all island speed limit, but nothing's happened yet. A report has apparently been submitted and a decision is going to be made based on its recommendations.

I sincerely hope that there is no all island speed limit.

As far as Mad Sunday goes, I've not heard anything about scrapping it! There wasn't one as such this year, and it's happened in previous years too, but only if the weather causes a race to be delayed and run on the Sunday instead.
