In February I bought a mint, low mileage TL1000s. A '97, full power, nasty reputation, beast. Since i've had it I've had to replace the front cylinder head, the clutch three times, a complete new engine, two sets of chains and sprockets, the rear shock, a full set of breakpads. Three sets of tyres. And to top it off I noticed two cracks in the frame and am in the proccess of getting it replaced. As i'm sure you've already guessed this has cost me thousands and is the kind of thing that happens to every bike i've owned. I ride hard but don't crash and don't skimp on maintainence. I was just wondering if anyone else destroys bikes like I do?

Clutchs normally go on these when the mechanic doesn't know what stack height is. That or you abuse the clutch.

Tyres wear out.

Chain and sprocket kits. Buy good quality X ring chains and lube the chain. The chain alone should be costing you around £90-£130.

I would love to know why the head needed replacing as well as a whole engine.

Did you run an HPI check on the bike before buying?

I am partial to wheelies so I suppose that could explain the clutch. The head smashed itself to pieces on my way to work one morning. I bought a head and got it fixed a couple of weeks later. About two months after that the crank siezed when I was racing my mates around the isle of mann. I've just had really bad luck with it. I bought it from someone I know who had it from new and never had any problems.

A head cannot smash itself to pieces. There would be a root cause.

Unless you are doing big long wheelies the crank won't sieze.

Both of the above could easily be caused by long wheelies or oil stavation or lack of servicing. What oil are you using?

Why are you using the clutch to wheelie? you don't need to on a TL especially a 97. More than enough torque to hoist the front on the throttle alone.

How many miles have you done/the bike done?

Haven't a clue why the head went. I got the bike with 5500 miles on the clock with a full, main dealer, service history. To get it on the back wheel in third gear you need the clutch. As for oil starvation I know a 90 degree Vtwin is the worst in the world for pulling long wheelies so I don't do it. All the work i've had done has been with Terry Shephard.

You said that the front cylinder head went before the crank.

I suppose that it's possible that, a tiny bit of metal from the first problem may have got into an oilway in the bottom of the engine, leading on to the crank problem, or some similar circumstance. Did you do the cylinder head yourself? Were you careful with engine flush and new oil etc?

I had the work done in a garage but that thought had crossed my mind. I think that you may be right.

It's a TL1000. They break. They break in expensive ways. They break frequently.

Cylinder head I'm unsure about.
Clutch sounds like it's either setup wrong or you're doing lots of wheelies and generally being very heavy on the clutch.
Complete new engine is cheaper than having the 'box repaired on its own.
Chain and sprocket same story as the clutch; it's a litre v-twin so it will like eating chain and sptocket sets.
Rear shock, get a hugger to keep shit off it.
Brake pads do need replacing.
Same with tyres, and it's torquey so will go through rear tyres quite happily.
Frame is a known fault with TL1000S's and should have been replaced FOC by Suzuki.
