PostPosted: 20:50 - 07 Nov 2005    Post subject: RESOLVED - CG125 - Bike Sounds funny after adding nuts? Reply with quote

Hi,

Basically, I went to B&Q today and bought a pack of 8mm galvanised nuts and some 10mm nuts with the aim of:

Bolting the exhaust to the swingarm (There are some bolts that looked like they were missing nuts)

and

Bolting a loose thread coming from just before the engine.

Now the bike sounds funny? Theres an audio file at the bottom of this post... Please have a listen! Smile

Here are pics of the nuts I added, can anyone with a CG125 please check and confirm that they have nuts in these locations on their bikes?

Thanks,

Toby

It doesn't sound right to me, but I can't remember exactly which nuts are where. Easy option: take the nuts off and see if it sounds like it should.

One thing though, bolting the exhaust to the swingarm? Confused The swingarm moves, the exhaust doesn't. Snap, crackle pop. There is a large bracket to bolt the exhaust to, also holding the pillion footpeg.

Sorry, didn't mean swingarm...

I've bolted it to where it's supposed to be bolted.

It sounds like that... But less stifled with the bolts off. Embarassed

Theres not a day that goes by without you messing something up is there mate? Very Happy

I have nothing constructive to offer, just thought I'd say you people have said the word "nut/s" so many times, I just went out at 3:10AM - 3 mile round trip - and brought some salted kp's.

Hope you're satisfied. Laughing

sounds alright when idling to me, bit rough when revving. I'd say ride it these things run on bad trestment so i think there'd have to be something major wrong for it to be unrideable.

B&Q might not be the best place to be buying bolts, cheap and nasy bolts go furry quick and might not be as srtong as they should.. dunno where to suggest but stainless steel is probably a good bet most of the time..

Only reason it might be makeing more/different noise is if you neglected to refit any washers/rubbers e.t.c. obviously to the correct tighness is impotant too!

CG125's are noisey rattely things, not advanced much since they were first manufactured in the 70's (in fact brazilian models aren't as well made as the jap produced models) as long as you keep your oil level right + chain in good order then any rattles are unlikely to be anything to worry about Wink

Ideally you would be using nuts and bolts with the number 8.8 stamped on top of them. This indicates it is quite a strong nut/bolt (something to do with the tensile strength of the steel I think. Anyone?). 5.4 is just about acceptable, 12.9 is very strong, I have bent allen keys in 12.9 set screws. I had a Russian bike with 3.2s on it once. They were like cheese.

D'oh, they were just random bags of nuts from B&Q... Hopefully they'll do for a stopgap measure.

well done that man. Thumbs Up
Imperial sizes are Grade2 thru 8 (altho specialist fasteners can be grade 10 like the head & main bearing studs on my 460 V8)
1 dash: Grade 3 (cheese)
3 dashes: Grade 5 (frame fasteners etc)
5 dashes: Grade 8 (crankcase bolts, caliper bolts etc)

If ya want the REALLY good shit go here:
https://www.arp-bolts.com/

They supplied every single nut, bolt, washer, stud, etc for my 460. All the critcal stuff is Grade 10 parkerized finished, all the non critical stuff on the outside of the engine is 12 point polished Stainless.Total cost of fasteners was about $650.00
You can find their stuff here: www.jegs.com but they don't make stuff for bikes.. yet

For future reference this is due to a snapped engine bolt, probably causing the engine to misalign with the gears, and vibrating inside the engine.

(The bolt in the second picture I posted)
