Ultra Seal

Has anyone used Ultra Seal and would you recommend it?

I've just changed my front tyre after getting a puncture. Luckily it happened after I had received the new tyres I had ordered form M and P. Unluckily it was the front that had the puncture when it was the rear that I wanted to change and scrub in first.

Anyway, I thought about using this pink goo but I have been advised not to by the fact that if you do get a puncture, you wont know about it. On the box however, it says you will, as there will be a tell tale sign. It's also supposedly guaranteed for the life of the tyre, so I'm thinking of using some anyway. If I get another puncture on fresh tyres I wont be a happy chappie.

Any thoughts?

Don't bother. I had it and it didn't work - I just ended up with 10psi and pink shit all over the back of my bike.

It also makes changing the tyre a real pain in the ass as you have to clean said pink shit off the rim.

Utter fucking shite ... and the company seems to be owned by a bunch of assholes.

I got it because I had a puncture in the rear tyre ... let the tyre down, put the purple shite in and pumped the tyre back up ... went for a run and pumped it up ... came back and pumped it up.

I then had to take the tyre off and put another one on, since the UltraShite didn't do what it was supposed to do!!!!

Got on to the company, spent my time and my money on calls, even sent a sample of the stuff down to them ... what did it get me ... absolutely fuck all, they didn't even have the courtesy to phone me back.

Don't waste yer money mate .... get some chewing gum, it'll work better.

As well as making it nearly impossible to carry out a proper tyre repair, it can block the valve.

I prefer to know when I have holes in my tyres.

You could carry some tyre weld with you as a 'get you home'.

Don't you have breakdown cover, either with your bike or as part of your insuraqnce package ?

One last 'benefit' of putting gloop in your tyres - wheel balance is completely buggered up and the bike can become quite interesting at speed.

FWIW I've been recommended that Ultra Seal/Slime/etc. are best used for off-road bikes where the chances of puncture and being stuck are high.

Having said that I know people with various touring bikes who've used Ultra Seal and run it until the tyre(s) need changing. One had about 4 puncture holes when replaced but ran fine. They didn't report any hassles when it came to replace the tyre(s).

Also FWIW I've been recommended by a good friend who uses it on his bike (does a lot of commuting miles) to use the green Slime stuff.

I have got breakdown cover with my insurance, but the point was if it happens again on a brand new tyre I cant afford to buy a new one. It's a bit of a waste of rubber. Everyone wants good mileage from their tyres, but a puncture can destroy it before it's scrubbed in.

I know that punctures are pretty rare, but they can still happen 5 miles after putting brand new rubber on. Kinda costly from that point of view.

I've used Ultra Seal before and once it worked really well but on the next set of tyres it decided to spray pink shite all over my bike. I think it really depends on the puncture. If you get a screw in the tyre you really need to pull it out as quickly as possible for the Ultra Seal to work at it's best cos if it stay's in place the hole won't seal up.

I've never had a problem with with the valves sealing up or when I got the tyres changed. They don't seem to mind it being in there.

I now just carry a tin of Tyre Weld under my seat. It's fantastic. I've done over 4000 miles on tyres with weld in them. I know it's supposed to be temporary but it always keeps the tyres inflated fine! There's nothing more annoying than getting some fresh tyres on and within 500 miles there is a damn screw sticking out of it!

There is a difference between gloop type products that you put in BEFORE a puncture, and the stuff you put in to repair a tyre.

The before puncture gloop is pretty good imo, if it saves you from getting punctures then great!

Thanks for the mixed responses, I thought it was going to all be one sided for a minute!

I think I'll give the Ultra Seal a miss and get some Tyre Weld, at least I'll be able to tell when there is a puncture.
