I'll start off by saying I don't know that bike exactly but they are much of a muchness. If I am being vague, it is because i don't know the exact details.
The wiring is very simple but prone to interference from the previous 15 or so 17 year old owners.
Ok. Does the brake light work with the engine off? If not, the battery could be flat. You could always test it with your meter, if there is at least 6v in it, it should be enough for the moment anyway. The frame is a negative earth.
First the obvious. Bulbs intact? Bulb holders rusty?
Next I would check the indicators themselves are working. Bad earths are common on bikes so check they are working. Easiest way is to connect a flying lead from the battery positive and touch it to the terminal of the wire going into each indicator in turn. If there are two, it is the coloured wire you want, not the white on black (which is the colour suzuki use for earth, although some just earth directly to the frame without a wire). If they don't all light up, deal with this first.
Next I would suspect the flasher relay, which is a metal cylinder about 1" in diameter usually located somewhere near the battery or under the tank (sometimes under a side panel, they are occasionally plastic and rectangular). There are two spade terminals on it usually labelled L and B. If there is power going into one of these with the flashers switched 'on' and it doesn't click, this is probably your problem (assuming the flashers themselves are working). You can buy a pattern 6V two pin flasher relay for about £3.50, they are not generally brand specific so eg. a honda one would do fine. These commonly fail, I have a pile of dead flasher relays in my workshop.
Failing that you are probably looking at a wiring fault, the colours carry through from the flasher relay and most of the wiring is in a big birds-nest inside the headlamp shell. Check for the usual broken/worn/disconnected wires. View any PVC tape with extreme suspicion as there was none in there when it came out of the factory!
The switch could also be faulty but this is unlikely.
Someone else with a wiring diagram may be able to give you more details. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

Errr, 6 volt electrics?
I did not know you got such a thing!
Are they definitely 6v on this bike, and if so, how intelligent is an Optimate charger , ooops.
The relay is full of water , probably not helping, will it be ok dried out or is it now FUBAR?
Thanks, Paul. |

This is sounding more complicated than my Thundercat!!!!
...and I can't believe that a tin pot ikkle sh*tter like this can be more trouble than an IL4 600
Christ, you just wind the rubber band up a bit more don't you?
You're right though, I think a workshop manual may be a good investment!
Satans Big Helper...if you have an old manual 'in the cupboard' or any other gems, let me know please.
Oh and we're in Brighton is the answer to your other question, Paul. |
