My brother bike is not starting after being sat ther for three week as his arm is healing form his off.

we have put a new exhaust on it and have ben tring to start it up today, this is what folowed;

* We cleaned the spark plugs.
* Wouldn't start.
* We then pushed it and after a few backfires got it started. However it then when taken off the choke cut out.
* Started but with poor throttle respones, and then cut out.

We then couldn't get it started ater pushing it up and down.

Any suggestions, could it just be bad/ old fuel?

The was a slight hissing comming from what i think is the fuel pump, but seemed to stop after it started up?

yep as my other brother "The Doctor" went and drove in home for him, and we did have it runing for a few minuets today but it then just cut out. with really poor throttle respone.

Do you think it would be a good idea to drain the tank and put some new fuel in it. As the fuel in there it am the mo is about three and a bit weeks old?

Petrol doesn't go stale in only three weeks. Is the bike stored outside? If so it might have got a bit damp, have you tried some WD40 on the plug leads and the plugs?

Is the kill switch pressed?

Does it have an imobalisor?

the bike is stored inside in a locked garage. and no imobilizer.

what do you mean by putting WD40 in the plug leads and plug and what woud that do?

WD40 will probably not help if the bike is in a garage.

It's only useful if there is a damp shorting problem with old HT leads, especially when it is chucking it down.

Whats this about a 'new exhaust' is it definitely compatible?
You have to have correct back pressure or the fuel/air mixture can be way out.

I'd start with your petrol idea, it's been stored for three weeks but how long before was it put in?, might have gone "off" a bit as they reckon the shelf life is only around 6 weeks or so, might also have a bit of water/moisture in it. Drain the carbs put fresh fuel in, clean the plugs again as you might have flooded the engine trying to start it earlier then try again. Worthwhile when you have the plugs out to see if they are sparking with a nice fat blue spark so you can discount the electrics side and concentrate on the fuelling part.

WOOHOOO

We finally got it started and now it is running fine, we drained all the fuel out of the tank and put in some fresh optimax and it started not without a push but it started and now i have ridden it it seems fine and starts first time.

I reckon it wasnt just the fuel but a mixture of old fuel and sitting in a damp, clod garage for three weeks but who cares as iv got it started and am back riding!!!

Thanks for all your help as it has been so frustrating not knowing why it wouldnt start.

Cheers guys and girls Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
