what should i do about my next bike

im wondering wot sort of bike i should get for my next one from a nsr125

its either a
second hand k-m reg vfr400 for about £2,000
or a second hand 2001 cb 600 f hornet for about £2,000

but which would have the cheaper insurance and im wanting to trade in my 2004 nsr125rr in or sale private for about £1,900

but at this stage it is just a thought as i wont be into the market for about a couple of months yet

any views?

A hornet will be more comfortable, have a better top speed, and overall be a nicer bike.

But the NC30 will be more sporty, have more credibility, handle better.

It's swings and roundabouts. Insurance would be about the same I think, but the hornet would have the better performance.

Most young rossi's get sports 400s, they do look ace, but smart money for a serious biker is on the hornet.

All depends what you want it for I guess.

Hornet is a cracking bike.

As gazadman said, the more serious, sensible biker would probably choose the hornet.

It'll beat the 400 on performance full stop. Quite easily.

Insurance, I will say, the hornet will be higher. Insurance groups are the same but the hornet seems to be binned more. Bin a hornet and you can fix it (if the spider frame hasn't been dinged) for minimal money. Try and say the same about the vfr. Fairing costs etc then paint jobs etc etc etc. I say naked bike or half naked for your first big bike

I'll never be able to get my head around people wh can pay that kind of moeny for a bike of THAT age. Especially when you can get my new bike for cheaper and the insruance, for me, was less than that of the hornet!! (j1 zx6r)

i just got a zxr 400 and feckin love it, had a go on the vfr and loved that to, looks more credible and more of a fanny magnet, get the vfr mate

i was talking to someone about the hornet and they said they had one once about a 2001 model and the setup on the supention was shit that it had to good a brakes the the springs and it was like a rocking horse when brake and cornering but honda hadnt fixed the problem till 2004/5ish is this true

Now why would you consider a 10 year old + bike over one thats just under 4 years old?

Doesn't it tell you something that the 400's keep their value artificially high?

Remember, the 400 will also have been thrashed to buggery, require more maintainence which will cost more due to the inherent design of some 400cc engines compared to the inline 4 of the 600.

Parts will also be alot easier to obtain for the Hornet, as Honda will still supply them. Saying that with alot of 400's still on the road parts seem very easy to come by at the moment.

It really does depend on what you use your bike for at the end of the day.

They are more ugly, I was just looking at your intention of using it for motorway use.

Sensible "head" option would be the Hornet, "heart" would be the 400 sports. As said the 400's are all going to be fairly old now and carry a bit of a premium on price. The Hornets are still in production but can look fairly bland in comparison.

What do you want, sports or traditional?

Why have a 10 year old bike thats a 17 year old design when you could have a 4 year old bike thats a 7 year old design?

The handling question shouldn't really figure in it. You're comparing a sports 400, which handles well, against a hornet, which also handles well. We're not talking about a 70s jap four with a hinge in the frame, we're talking about a modern design.

Parts will be cheaper and more available on the hornet, and it has 20 more horsepower and a much better midrange. Comes down to you being able to cover distance on it quicker than on a sports 400.

However, test ride both, to be sure.

I have had an old 400 and a new 600 i would say get the newer bike, i had no end of problems with my GSXR simple becuase most bikes of that age 1990 are coming to the end of their life. I'm sure there are some bikes out there that are absolutely fine but you could get screwed over like i did and end up paying almost the bikes value in repairs and it still not working properly.

Spents £3,200 on my GSXR400 excluding insurance basically for the bike and repairs, sold it for £400 in the end.

Do the right thing and get newer.

Plus hornet will be quicker.

I'd take the 400, but I wouldn't buy another one next, unless I knew it was really well looked after!

I am pleased to see that most of you say the Hornet is a good idea for the next bike as this is the bike that I am keen to get if and when I pass my test. There is a neat hornet 600 at my local bike dealers, has been there since the summer now, its quite new and fits me just right, have sat on it now a couple of times and am convinced its just waiting for me
Another one I have looked at is the Fazer then the bandit, both seem comfy bikes with pretty much upright riding position, I am in for practicality and cheaper insurance

Id suggest test riding both and deciding which you prefer.
If you cant get a test ride from a dealer, I'm sure someone on ebay will let you try out their bike as you might buy it.

I know a test ride wont give you a complete picture of what the bike will be like to own, but its better than just relying on what a bike looks like and what people say about it.

It might actaully be worth riding two of each type, as a duff one might give you the wrong impression of that model.
