DVLA shopped in Tesco row

he DVLA has come under fire for giving a supermarket giant the details of motorists who flout store parking restrictions.

Tesco has teamed up with licensed agency Ranger to access the DVLA database for details of drivers who have stayed beyond its free three-hour limit. The shop then sends a warning letter and, for repeat offenders, a £70 fine.

But MP Peter Atkinson is furious with the authority for passing on personal details to his local Tesco in Hexham, Northumberland. "It's outrageous that a firm has access to such a database," he said. "This is a private car park. I can't see how the store can possibly enforce payment."

A Tesco spokeswoman explained that the scheme was designed to prevent all-day parking. She told us: "It's not true to say that Tesco gets access to names and addresses, because we don't. We use a licensed agency, and the system is strictly monitored by the DVLA."

The DVLA said regulations allow the release of inform-ation to anyone who can demonstrate "reasonable cause" for their request. Mr Atkinson has written to Transport Secretary Alistair Darling over the matter.

Seems a bit dodgy that the DVLA are handing out details like this.

All the best

Keith

'Tis a wee bit strange, but if you abide by the rules, what is there to worry about?

As said sounds dodgy to me.

Seems I could have 'reasonable cause' to ask for details of a car that has been blocking access to my property. Obviously the DVLA wouldn't know if it actually had or if it was just a scam to get the info.

Quite disconcerting really Confused

I went to get some bits for a mates car the other day and they wanted his registration number, i asked why and was told that it would tell them what make, year of manufacture, model, colour etc it was.
When i asked where they got it from they said "the D.V.L.A data base"!
They are selling our info!
It might make companys jobs easier to find parking violaters and identify your model of car but how long before some little chav gets hold of the info and vehicle's get stolen?

It would be interesting to see how they would enforce the fine. Question

Tescos is getting very very big now. Our local store has just had a massive upgrade, a new level opened etc.

I expect Tescos could get a lot of information about anyone and anything, even their store cards collect data.

I used to work for them, so when they rule the world they better remember me Cool

Hi

Can't be bothered with them screaming at me to take my crash helmet off so I no longer use Tescos to be honest.

All the best

Had exactly the same problem with them last year in the new Stockport branch... Each time they ask me to take it off i simply claim to be deaf.
If you put fuel in the bike with your helmet on then they should accept your money as payment for the fuel.

NOW

If they refuse to accept your money for the fuel dispensed that is THEIR problem and it is to be treated as a GIFT!

The above was told to me by a criminal law solicitor earlier this year.
They MUST accept money if it is legal tender OR it is to be seen as a gift, the CCTV in ALL Tesco fuel stns will prove you attempted to pay, if they dispose of the tape then you still win as there will be no other proof you were even there to put the fuel in Thumbs Up

I once had a private car park send me a 'fine' because I had apparently parked outside the white lines (which were almost non-existant). I wrote back to them, telling them to get stuffed (basically) as I knew there was nothing they could do. They replied, 'suggesting' I used a car park down the road in future! Laughing

More worrying than Tesco getting your address is the fact that anyone of the street can apply to the DVLA for this information with some made up 'reasonable cause' I believe it costs £2.50 and any psycho you cut up (or thinks you cut him up Rolling Eyes )) can posssibly find out where you live Thumbs Down

It's hardly a new issue, you've always been able to do that. Tesco are getting too big for their boots though.

A new Tesco Express just opened up in Cheddar, and all the business has flushed right there, it's affecting local trade severely.

And in Burnham about 10 miles away, they've gotten permission to expand by 2/3rds, double their car park and put a petrol station in.

I won't complain about the petrol station (I hate Esso, which is all there is otherwise), but they are killing other businesses round here.

They just refused to turn the pumps on unless I took my lid off. I just replaced the pump and found another petrol station. Stuff em. 5p a litre extra is hardly much of a problem on the size of tank on a bike.

All the best

It costs our company £60 to ask the DVLA to give us details from a registration number.

what i love about petrol stations is when there is a massive que i always cut the que and find a pump, its funny watching every ones faces as they cant use that pump as there cap is on the wrong side Very Happy

but my m8 is a pussy he never cust the ques or filters down huge lines of traffic, as the thinks ist unfair, i say if i can fit, they can av it, and im invented this crazy rule that if theres more thatn 3 cars in front of me iv gotta get to the front Very Happy

i never take my lid off even if they tell me to, as i usually pay in cash i just leave the cash on the counter and walk away, as i already have my fuel Very Happy stuff em

Same thing happened to me in Streatham, I just forgot to put the nozzle back in the pump and I never used that garage again.

As a point, when i worked at tesco they were just implementing this.

Dont think it reads numberplates from the rear, so bikes SHOULD be ok. Id double check obviously. They are also apparently able to tell speeds etc and inform police, who can nab you outside.

But amusingly loads of staff got letters saying 'you were spotted in upper glasgow branch where nyou overstayed. We will waive this fine this time, as you are staff'

Most of which were working those days etc. Big cock ups.

Personally id ignore the fine completely if i got one. Main reason people pay is embaressment.

They could never enforce that fine.

Ridiculous. We used to have a booth that you had to pay at to get out of our tesco.

If you 'lost' your ticket, which blatently meant you stayed all day and commuted to London, the charge was £6.

Caused lots of problems, including several people breaking the barrier.

I've never been told to take my lid off at petrol stations, but then I don't wear it into the actual shop anyway.

I don't really see the problem with removing it to pay. But if they refuse to turn the pump on I'd lay the smack down.

I normally pay at the pump too.

I worked in a Tesco petrol station, and you actually have to do something to turn the pump off for a biker. It defaults to being on.

Hi

Petrol is something I want to get in a hurry. I don't want to faff around taking a lid off putting it somewhere it will not be run over / knocked off the pump / etc, faff round with ear plugs, faff round trying to dry my glasses that have got a load of extra water drops on, etc.

If they insist on me taking my lid off I will just go elsewhere (and that includes for any other shopping).

All the best

Keith

Do you wear a full faced helmet when you go shopping? Confused Or did I just misinterpret that? Embarassed

Err, nope not while shopping, but yes when filling with petrol on the bike. Just that if they are going to wind me up when I am on the bike I am not going to forget it just because I am driving a car.

All the best
