No, I haven't binned any of my bikes, so you can all breathe a sigh of relief (or disappointment, for those who were just itching to say 'Told ya' so').

No, nothing like that.

I have a physical (medical) condition that now means I have to put my bikes to bed for the winter and use the car instead.

I suffer from what is know as perthes disease, which affects my hips to such a point that it becomes difficult (sometimes almost impossible) to walk, let alone 'cock' my legs over a bike.

The cold weather only worsens the situation. So, I have decided to put the bikes to bed for the winter.

This may sound surprising to a lot of you but, Perthes is usually associated with younger children. I never realised it, but I had this illness when I too was a child of (say) 12 years old. But I never knew it, nor did my parents. At that time I was a gymnast (yeh, go on then, laugh) and I always put the pain down to either 'Growing Pains' or muscle aches due to the activities of being a gymnast.

And the story could go on - blah, blah, blah.

Suffice to say, I now need to have both of my hips replaced.

Here's a link - https://www.perthes.org.uk/

So. The bikes have now been put under cover and I'm using the car instead.

I hate it. It takes longer to defrost the car and scrape the ice off it than it does to get the bike started and ready to ride.

Give me the bike any day. I love it.

Still, I'll be back on the bike in the very early Spring. Even sooner if the weather looks promising Thumbs Up

I'd rather have the car to be perfectly honest. Trying to start my bike up today at 5 degrees was nigh on impossible! Maybe it's a sign i need a new battery, but it started off fine.

I wouldn't appreciate commuting on a bike at these temperatures myself anyway, I think a few more people will be forced to go fair weather biker this year. Brr. Sad I made it through last year going 10 miles each way, but God I got cold, in January I wanted nothing more than a car. Mad

Shocked sorry to hear that you old fart, but probably best at your age Wink Seriously though, if you look after yourself now and do as you're told, you'll soon be back on the bike...better that than not riding again.

Look after yourself Thumbs Up

i know what you mean but this year i am going to hold off cars/buses as 6 miles on my bike each way isn't that far and i want to see how much it improves my riding come the spring time, plus love filtering! Laughing

You know it Thumbs Up

All I'll be is a biker in a car. EVERY biker will still get my respect Thumbs Up

It just looks strange to everyone else when I'm nodding to passing bikers. Others cagers and pedestrians think I've got some sort of stupid affliction Shocked

Of course I will (sorry everyone, you don't get away that lightly Razz )

Believe me, the first mild day that comes along when I'm not at work, then I'll be out on one of the bikes for a bit of a breeze (I don't want my bikes to get lonely - they were designed to be ridden) Thumbs Up

I've only got a physical disposition ya' know. I'm not dead Shocked

Thanks for your concern anyway, dodsi Thumbs Up

After many years of martial arts training I understand the difference this kind of weather makes to old (ish) blokes like us. Most mornings I wake up with pains in my knees and shoulders sometimes to the point that I have to roll out of bed because I simply can't stand up. A regime of sit ups, push ups, and pull ups usually sorts me out but I always worry how I will cope when I'm really old.

It sounds stupid but it feels like I lost a friend when it hurts too much to ride the bike, its not the bike, it could be a c90 for all I care, its everything to do with being stuck in a car on an hour long commute.

Look after yourself chap, plenty more summers to go yet, could always move to Spain.
