This morning when I started my bike there was a huge amount of condensation coming out of the exhaust. I know that condensation is to be expected in this cold weather but I have never seen quite this much before. I really do mean there was a hell of a lot you could see it drifting from my driveway down beside the house and into the back garden. Also this was with the choke on and therefore it was idling at around 3000 rpm it did die down once I turned the choke of and it idled at 1100 rpm.

Could someone confirm wether this was just condensation or is it something else.

My bike is a 2000 ER-5 if it helps.

It'll just be condensation, moisture would have built up to a fair level when it cooled down in the cold weather when you last used it and you're just steaming it off in just as cold conditions so it looks a lot more, don't worry about it. Same really as when you breathe in the cold air yourself, colder it is the more of your breath you see coming out.

An engine produces huge quantities of water vapour when it is running. On a cold day you will see it condense into white clouds very quickly, on a warm day you just never see it. As the exhaust gets properly hot, it puts out hotter steam which doesn't condense so quickly and disperses before you can see it.

Imagine boiling a kettle outside on a cold day, how much more steam would you see as compared to boiling it inside?

Ok thanks for putting my mind to rest. It was just that I hadn't seen it suffer this much from the condensation. Guess i'll just have to get used to it.

Practical proof of a hypothesis. Good scientific thinking. I suggest you use a glass of lukewarm water as a control. I expect to see your report on my desk by the end of the week.

Just be glad you ain't got a 125 2T (like the NSR).

My whole street used to fill with smoke - between the cold mornings and the 2T burning - smelled great though Thumbs Up Cool
