I have a K5 2005 model year Suzuki marauder and it has been running very poorly ever since it became cold. I've done about 7000 miles and i've recently had it serviced. I find that at times it will not start unless i open the throttle while cranking it over. I also get power lag quite a lot, almost as if the bike was about to run out of fuel, yet there is plenty in the tank. I have also found that after running it at high speed for a few minutes it will die once i let the throttle off, and then it becomes difficult to start again. I have heard a loud rattling kind of noise coming from the engine when i rev it up to about half of full throttle while not moving.

I'm quite worried about this as i am hoping to sell it next spring and i dont want to have to fork out loads to repair it in order to get a decent price for it.

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks

Liam

I'm not too sure on what it could be i'm afraid but i don't think the rattling and the dieing are connected. the dieing sounds liek carburation to me and the rattling could really be anything, if you bought it new then should it not still be under warrenty? if it is just take it in n ask them to take a look at it for you Thumbs Up

Yes I thought I would probably end up doing that. Will i not still have to pay for labor while they take a look? I have over a years worth of warranty left.

Some throttle opening is normal depending on the bike. You shouldn't have to give more than 1/4 throttle. How much choke are you using? You should use full choke in the cold, and not just in the morning.

Again, this sounds like you aren't using the choke enough, or switching it off too early.

If there's a technical problem, it should be under warranty.

Can you give more detail? How loud? Top of engine? Bottom? Does it do it in gear (and still stationary)

I do use about a quarter throttle when the bike won't start. I use the choke but only for about a minute then I switch it off.

It sound like it is coming from the top end or possibly from the timing chain. AS long as the engine isnt under load it seems to make the noise. It is accompanied by a heavy vibration but i'm not sure exactly where it is coming from.

The performance symptoms you describe match not using enough choke. In winter you should use the choke on full to start and leave it there for a good few minutes. Don't think that you need to switch the choke off before you pull away.

It is in your interest to back it off as soon as you can, but not to the detriment of the performance of the engine.

After pulling away, try setting choke to half and then switch off only when the engine is fully warm. If the bike is air-cooled this could even be up to 30 minutes.

Too much choke = bad performance, too little choke = bad performance. You have to gradually put the choke in as the engine warms - you can judge when by how it runs. Feel free to experiment.

Re noise - could be cam chain, but rare on a bike lower than 1 yr old. I'd check it on warranty.
