I dont push bikes to their limit.
I ride my rs125 to 80% of its ability on dry roads.
Since Ive got my 600, I have not wanted to take it out in the fog and ice and am waiting for better weather. I have taken it out a few times but have been riding it to only 10% of its ability and not accelerating much faster than I do on my rs125.
Today the weather cleared a bit at 3pm so I took it out thinking I wd practice putting the power down a bit on a bit of dual carriageway I know. I thought maybe I have been a bit overcautious and shd open it up a bit.
So I'm 10%ing it and then I start giving it maybe 20% throttle. Fine for a while, but then on exiting a roundabout I put the power on a bit early before Id fully straightened up.
The back went out and it felt like 15 degrees or more which feels like a lot when you arent expecting it. It went out fairly slowly and smoothly and it was back in in a second with a wiggle of my bum with a slight reduction in throttle. Once I was straight I was thinking shit, I was lucky there.
The roads were wet and there may have been a bit of diesel but there certainly wasnt any ice.
Not surpringly I went back to 10%ing Its taking me a while to get used to engine braking so Im thankful i didnt shut the throttle completely and make it worse.
Im also glad I chose a bike that steers quick.
Im sure an experienced rider wd never have got in that position in the first place, but if I had been on a bike that steers in a more sluggish manner, I dont think It wd have been as easy to correct.
So this thread is not "WoW nearly came off but saved it, im an awesome rider !", it is "wow i fucked up, but the bike let me get away with it !"
im glad I wasnt that guy on a harley ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god

I had the NSR slide under a little bit of power the other day, wasn't icy, just a newly surfaced road which was damp. Scared me so much I pulled in and walked back to the surface just to see how slippery it was, if you ran and then stopped, you could slide along it on your feet
As a consequence I now take that corner at about 3mph (90 degree left hand bend). The cagers behind me don't like it though.
Glad you didn't bin it Take it easy.

Been doing the same recently, first few times was a mistake but starting to get a feel for it and doing it quite alot now.
Felt the dogs today as I stopped the bike with a bicycle style rear skidding around. Not cool I know but still is. ____________________ Enjoy Life There's Plenty of Time to be Dead

Don't enjoy sliding the bike, but in the wet I always take advantage of empty roundabouts in the car and get the nose pushing and losing grip. ____________________ Northern Irish? www.nibikers.com |

It's interesting you say that. I've seen lots of threads about coming off or nearly coming off and the mention of ice. I've not actually been aware of the roads being icy, frost in the morning and night yes, but not properly icy yet.
I had a major wheel spin/slide/side to side thing the other morning on the way to work. I'm fairly sure there was no ice about, it seems to me that it's just a cumulation of things making the roads really greasy and slippery. Dirt, tar, rock salt, surface spray, weather conditions, general road grime, etc. My kit is ending up looking like it's been sand blasted in a dirty brown dried on mud. Once on the visor it doesn't seem to be wiping off, more so this year than ever and I've done quite a few winters. I actually carry a piece off kitchen roll in my pocket for impromptu visor cleaning stops and the stuff just won't come off. I've been having to make a hole in it enough to get to where I'm going.
Is this just a Midlands phenomenon or is it country wide?
The bike is more powerful than the Blade I was riding last winter, but it still delivers placid power at low revs and I'm using the same tyres. It really does seem worse this year than I can remember previous years being, I've had more slides in the last week than I ever have in my riding life time.
Perhaps it's a BRAKE conspiracy to get us child murdering bikers off the road once and for all. Have they spiked the rock salt with Teflon? |

It really is the slimey season again. Northeast Derbyshire had plenty of ice last week, though the only really dangerous stuff was from drains running across the road. Most of it was in the grooves dug by car tyres wearing off the top road surface, and fairly easy to avoid. It is interesting to see how the conditions can change even over a short distance, as you go up and down hills and into valleys.
I'm now having to clean my visor before every ride so I can see anything in the dark. The half-arsed glowworm in the CG headlamp doesn't help mind you. My trousers and boots look like I've been adventuring through a freshly ploughed field, and my bike looks like it has been sprayed with old engine oil. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Why do people call "nearly crashing" a "powerslide"
You nearly crashed, powerslides when it's done deliberately... anything else is a near crash! It's very very very easy to "powerslide" in these conditions all by "accident" and every time I'd consider it a potential crash if it's "accidental" then it's not worthy of bragging on internet forums :p ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

The salt on the road acts like a mildly abrasive polishing compound. On those road surfaces that have loads of little stones stuck in them where there is salt down and a high traffic flow, the stones can land up being polished to the consistency of glass.
Careful not to close the throttle too much in a rear end slide, if you unload the rear with the back and front wheels pointing in different directions, you are asking for a highside. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. You can't lose the front end under power.
At least, not by itself which is as good a reason as any to power round corners. If they both go you better hope you are on a supermoto! ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

One front end slide in the dry I caught. The next one in the wet I didn't catch. They were both in a straight line under braking.
The first one was saved by instinctively letting go of the brake lever and being in a dead straight line. The second had already gone too far and being on a slippery surface, wouldn't regrip and start spinning the wheel again. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
