Just a thought at my 33 years, i wouldn't know a metre from a sausage.
But I do understand some of it, whilst I think In miles and feet and inches, I realise youngsters might not.
What does everyone think?

I tend you use what I can visualise; a 100m running track, 100 yard motorway marker, multiples of 6ft (my height, near enough), 12 inches..... |

Imperial for estimates, metric for maths is my system. 12" is easier to visualise than 300mm.
As a friend has pointed out to me at great length. When it comes to engineering, imperial threads are designed for optimum strength and function, metric ones are designed for mathematical convenience. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. The important measurements:
Imperial first -
Pint - Beer
Ounce - Weed
Miles - Per hour
There are no real important measurements in metric, none that lead to a happy life, such as the above

Being 20 and having never been taught imperial measurements I really struggle with fractions! My mindset is 99% metric, distances, weights volumes etc. The first time I really used any amount of imperial was learning how to drive and (sort of) nautically.
I struggle to imagine what its like to not think metrically probably similar to how you old dears think about not thinking the old fashioned way ____________________ Its a lovely day, just wait until some bastard spoils it. |

I'm sorry to admit it, but to a mathematically challenged person like myself, the imperial system seems to have been designed as an ancient instrument of mental torture; firstly it's all bloody fractions, secondly it's not all in divisions of 10(so i can use the 10 digits on my hands), and thirdly it's all bloody random(like 12 ounces to a pound, but 14 pounds to a stone, plus all the wierd stuff like rods, chains, cables, furlongs, leagues, pecks and bushels).

Being young I work entirely in metric.
You imperial lot can clearly not deny that 3mm is better than 2/64ths!
What size spanner do you want, size M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5? Simply numeracy.
...Or in imperial, 2/16ths, 3/8ths, 9/131sts or a half-pigney? Ridiculous.
Metric is far superior. Sorry to those who cant visualise it instinctively because of habit, but it is indeed right and proper that imperial is replaced with the more logically inspired metric system. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

1 third of an inch is 8.466666666 (recurring 6) millimetres. Can't get any more accurate than that. It can be written down more accurately than it can realistically be measured. It's each to his own I believe. If you like metric work in metric and the same goes for Imperial. Metric just makes more sense as it's powers of 10. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm. Previous: Firestorm (written off) - XJ600 Divvy - NSR125 - DT125 and a load of offroaders. |
