Hyosung Comet 250

New to me - 1600miles on the clock (14 months old)

I noticed when it was first delivered that when I started it and put in into 1st gear I couldn't get it back into neutral. I tried revving it slightly (like some Suzukis need) to get it into neutral, but no go. I turned the ignition off and back on without starting the engine and it popped back easily.

Now I have just been for a test ride and it still won’t go into neutral. It also wont even get out of 1st. I have tried everything and I am pretty certain that I am not the problem - it is the bike.

I don’t think it is a problem with the clutch because I can’t get it to do a clutchless gear change, so - from my fairly limited knowledge of bikes - I am assuming it is a problem with the gearbox.

Make sure that the gear lever isn't catching on the frame stopping it from goin up far enough to engage 2nd gear or neutral, if so just undo it move it round a notch and slide it back on a spline less so it sits further down giving you more room to click up into gear. Let me know how it goes Thumbs Up, Dan

Thanks. I will have a look in the morning.

But as soon as I turn the engine off it goes into neutral with no trouble. When the engine in running the gear shift seems to be seized up - it wont budge up or down.

Confused Does sound like it could be the gearbox if its jamming inside, try moving the splined selector rod in and out as it could be that it has been dropped and the rod has been forced inside the gearbox moving the gear up the shaft meaning it will only select gear in a certain position. Have a play around with what you can see on the outside see if you can find anything Thumbs Up, Dan

The clutch is probably out of adjustment, so it is still applying a torque to the drivetrain with the clutch pulled in. If you adjust the cable at the top end (for minor adjustment) and/ or at the bottom end (for major adjustment) so that it is tighter, the clutch should have a greater disengagement when you pull the lever in to the bar.

I believe the actuating arm (at the bottom end of the cable) should be at 90 degrees to the fore-aft axis of the bike when the lever is out, assuming the clutch isn't worn out. At 1600 miles, it really shouldn't be, and gearbox damage isn't especially likely.

Also try rocking the bike back and forth after you've come to a standstill to persuade the clutch to disengage properly and neutral to select more easily. Gear selection problems are usually an indicator of low or old engine oil, or of an ill-adjusted clutch.

Common problem with the GT250 gearbox. Go to Yahoo and do a search for the comet owners group or 25 owners group. Very helpful bunch. Most are from Korea or thereabouts but speak/translate in English. Laughing

Go with the search for user groups to get the best info.

However, FWIW, this can also be caused by too much oil. Usually this is when topping up the oil before it has chance to get to the sump so you get a true reading. Had this once, went for a longish ride and couldn't get neutral at the end of it. Sorted by a change of oil (measuring quantity that went in from user manual/engine markings).

HTH Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up Yeah i agree but i guess it depends on how far up and down the gear lever is moving though, if its moving all the way up to where it used to engage gear but not doing anything then that would be different to the clutch not disengaging as this would mean the gear lever simply wouldn't raise to where it should. Check it out and let us know how it goes Thumbs Up, Dan

The gear shift isn't moving at all... well very slighty. Nowhere near as much as it would have to move to change gear.

Thanks for all your advice. Thumbs Up I will be having a tinker after work tonight.

Eh? Not quite sure what a splined selector rod is - but I will look out for it! Ahhh the joy of tinkering with machinery you know nothing about Razz

I agree that this is almost certainly the problem. Rotating the cable adjuster knob at the clutch lever forward should fix the problem, but as said, you may need to adjust it further down by the gear select.
