I had my first proper tank slapper today... I've had little ones but nothing like this.. lock to lock....

I was going along a fast-ish A road on the way home, and I went to overtake 3 cars along a straight. There was a thin strip of white markings (see attached pic) down the middle, so I pulled into this and accelerated.... then the bars just twitched and started flapping like crazy, luckily I remembered not to snap the throttle shut and I ended up pulling in after the second car, but I sh*t myself.
Are these markings usually so dangerous? on past bikes I've always ridden on these with no troubles, but to be fair this bike has alot more power than anything I've had before... its possible I hit something lying in the road, but I'm not sure, I'd really like to make sure this doesn't happen again... any thoughts? is this normal so I was dumb to overtake on these or is this a freak occurance?

More likely that you hit something with your front wheel light from the acceleration from overtaking the cars.

Good fun aren't they Mr. Green

I had something similar earlier this year and got my bike looked at. Turned out one of the bearings in my front wheel had disintegrated. Shocked

Yeah right Confused , think you're getting confused between the front going a bit light with a bit of a wiggle not a proper banging lock to lock tankslapper. With a proper slapper you either come through it or you don't, luck of the draw, because you aren't going to wheelie out of it Mr. Green .

Now THIS is a tankslapper Shocked https://www.bikepics.com/movies/000464/

If you are in the right gear and its not too bad then you can wheelie out of it although i have never really had a tankslapper like that video. Shocked

I managed to do this on my scoot... not really a tank slapper, as there isn't a tank, but I swerved really quick for some reason, front lifted with the quick movement, and came down with the bars on opposite lock. They banged from side to side for a good few metres before the scoot settled down. That's my scariest moment on 2 wheels yet Neutral Thumbs Down

had a big one a wile ago, over taking a bike at around 100mph an hit a bump in the road wile moving back onto my side. scariest moment on a bike as of yet, was waiting for the thing to kick me off an for me to be sliding along the ground an the guy on the gold wing thinking (bellend) he was french aswel,, must have only slapped for about 2-3 secs but it felt like a whole min, ther was no way i could do anything it nearly ripped my shoulder out of its socket lol.

But as soon as it had came it had gone an I was toodling along as normal sept with a tear in my eye

people who say "just pin the throttle an wheely out of it, stay on the throttle" i cant help but think, they have never experienced one, not just a twitch from the front, but a full on lock to lock.

from my experience it happens so fast and is so violently you are pretty much helpless an its gana do what it likes and your only along for the ride...

if you get a genuine tankslapper the only thing you can do is hold on
if you've got the opportunity to accellerate, wheely, brake then it's not a tankslapper.

Once heard of a guy who got a big tankslapper on a r1, so violent it was going to throw him over the handlebar's. The only thing that stopped him was his knee got jammed between the tank and the handlebar, in so stopping the tankslapper.

iv only ever hed one on cbr600rr scare's you enough to spend £230 on a dampner Thumbs Up

Tankslappers I've had before have sorted themselves out. The bars are so out of control there is F all you can do. They are over in 1-2 seconds but in that time the bars are slapping lock to lock sooo many times. You don't really have time to think about a reaction. Maybe you do but survival instinct kicks in mainly.

It's the speed slappers you need to worry about, you power through it but you know it's gona happen again when you slow down, you soon learn if you've got the bottle!

Bike manufacturers need to fit some kind of device (short of a steering damper) to all bikes to prevent these, they look bloody awful, hope I never have one.

Whats scary is the way people describe them "just happening" for no apparent reason.

A 10 second tankslapper. Shocked

The crazy one on that video was only about 4 seconds long, 10 seconds seems slightly far fetched.

I've had a few bar wobbles, never a proper one though, i don't want to either.

Fuck that for a funny joke. SO the question is are you safer on a lower powered bike then a bigger one??

Think Im safe on the old gpx barely enough power to get it up the gutter let alone the front wheel anywhere near leaving the deck.
