While they all have obvious similarities, each bike in the RS series, from the RS50 through the 125 and the 250 have all changed noticably over the years.
When the Various RS models were introduced, all three featured the distinctive shark nose fairings (headlight of the bike jutting right out out above the front wheel, looking just like a shark's nose), although the RS50's lines have always been a lot more conservative compared to its bigger brethren.
The two smaller older model bikes also feature three spoke wheels as opposed to the RS250 that has always had five spoke wheels, the older RS50's in particular featuring single sided swingers.
Over time, the three spoke wheels on the 50 and 125 were replaced with five spokers. The RS50 lost its single sided swinger and got a normal double sided one. The sharksnose fairing was flattened, to make the bike what it is today. Similar changes in bodywork took place with the RS250, that also had changed suspension and engine/gearbox components as of '98.
The RS 50 carries its one small can on the right hand side of the bike, the same as the RS250, which has two normal sized cans mounted one above the other.
The RS125 (in stock configuration) has one normal sized can on the left hand side of the bike with the sprockets and drive chain on "the wrong side" of the bike. Something that remains unchanged by Aprilia to the present day (not including the 2006 RS125 which is a totally different beast and seems to bear little relation to previous models.
Other noticable differences in the bikes include the frame, with the alu-magnesium frame of the RS250 being totally different to the steel framed 125's and 50's, in look, configuration and method of manufacture.
When the "big update" took place in 1998, the bikes became a lot "closer" to each other in terms of visual styling. Each bike now features a distinctive seat unit, and the aforementioned "bullnose" fairing Bear in mind that the RS125 has one air induction duct in the nose of the bike - neither the 50 or the 250 ever featured this technology, presumably because it wouldn't serve any purpose on a 50, and wasn't required on the 250.
The end effect of the changes is that the bikes now look extremely similar, and it is usually only a trained eye that can spot the difference.
While the exhausts are the main giveaway, it is worth noting that all three bikes are capable of fitting alternate exhaust configurations, the RS250 can stick to its shotgun style stacked cans, or have one can either side of the bike. The RS125 can trade its normal one can for shotgun style cans, and even the RS50 can mount a pair of tiny (but useful, or larger but useless) cans.
In general, the best way to tell what bike you're looking at is to look at the back numberplate.
If there's an L plate hanging from it, it's probably not a 250. If there is, check what side the exhaust is on, if it's on the left, it's a 125. If it's on the right, it's a 50 .
If the owner's gone and splashed out on a new exhaust system, just check the swingarm. The RS250 swingarm is more "solid" than other designs, featuring no bracing of any type, unlike the "lattice" type swingarms used on the smaller bikes.
Other differences will no doubt present themselves, but considering I wrote this thing entirely off the top of my head, I'm rather pleased with it . ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/nsrandy/96rs250/ My Bike!
