Just bought MCN and noticed this article...

Apologies if it has been posted before...

Quote:

The DVLA is giving bike thieves all the information they need to steal your bike - for less than the price of a pint. The news has come to light this week as the RAC launches a campaign to get the bonkers policy overturned. Currently, anybody who likes the look of your bike can simply jot down its registration, then write to the DVLA claiming to have been involved in a collision or incident with the motorcycle and, in return, they'll be sent the full address of where the bike is registered.

The DVLA will send this information to anyone who fills out form V888 available at the DVLA website for the meagre sum of £2.50, if they can demonstrate "reasonable cause for needing it".

However it made no attempt to validate these cases, even though the information is available for any vehicle on the road.

Sheila Rainger of the RAC Foundation told MCN "We have contacted the DVLA to voice our concerns but they refuse to change the practise".

The DVLA refused to admit the possibility of security breaches, claiming "little evidence of abuse requiring a change in the law".

The DVLA's spokeman added "Vehicle keepers are advised of the possibility of their details being released on their V5C vehicle registration certificate".

He added "The DVLA does not release information from its driver record, only from its vehicle record and only when reasonable cause, such as a motoring offence can be demonstrated".

Yet when MCN wrote to the department to complain about a motorcyclist scraping his handlebar along the side of a car we were given the riders full home address and vehicle information for £2.50.

There is more but I have highlighted what I read that was important. Apparently there is an MP Norman Baker who is fighting this in the House Of Commons as he believes it contravenes the Data Protection Act.

Meanwhile though...

Think I may boobytrap my bike from now on

And we get in the shit for not helping the dvla keep their records updated. Rolling Eyes

It's quite tempting to take a trip to Swansea and wander around the DVLA carpark jotting down reg plates, isn't it?

It has been inferred that as MCN is a pile of poo these days that its just scaremongering, however they have quoted peoples names etc and I doubt even MCN would risk a slander case against themselves just to sell papers...

Worrying, very worrying peeps... Sad

Nothing to worry about, as MCN have very reliably stated that biking will soon be banned - problem solved.

I would personally like to take a moment to salute the utter bollox that shite wipe rag has peddelled in the last twelve months. Clapping

Shame it isn't in breach of the data protection act Evil or Very Mad I'm sure it should count as neglegance if your bike is stolen with the information they supply, though.

Would it help in anyway if the accident was reported to police first, and you had to provide a crime number to get the info?

Since we're all chipping in, I'll add my two cents about MCN, it is indeed sensationalist crap; Far worse than any tabloid newspaper. I insist nobody ever buys it again, and wouldnt mind if it went out of business.
