Chains?

Right I need a new chain for my bike and I am abit baffled by X-Ring, O-Ring and heavy duty.

Is X-Ring really better than O-Ring and are O-Ring/X-Ring really worth the premium over standard heavy duty.

The only only reason why I ask is a Heavy Duty chain is £15, O-Ring is £30 and X-Ring is £65.

Help please.

P.S. If anyone in the local vicinity of me has a chain tool I can borrow or if they'd allow me to pop down and use said tool I'd be grateful!

Get an X ring chain, get a dealer to fit it with new sprockets and then youve got a 17000 mile or maybe more guarentee
DID X ring every time for me to be honest, especially if you have a Big twin, big inline four or triple.

HD is stronger. X-ring is more tolerant of neglect. O-ring comes between the two.

I had an 'DID X RING GOLD' chain put on me bike last week, looks much more better and will hopefully last longer, well worth the extra cash

If you honestly believe you will look after it then get a HD. This time of year, assuming your using the bike, you would be better off getting the 'o' ring. 'x' ring might last longer but to be honest its not worth double the price with the bike you have. Have you checked you sprockets?

I wouldn't imagine the X-Ring chain will last twice as long as the O-Ring chain, so I'd rule that out straight away. Some bikes eat chains up quicker than others, in which case it'd be prudent to invest in the O-Ring chain. However on a Superdream I'd be inclined to go for the normal heavy duty chain, and oil it regularly or even better fit a chain oiler. If it wears out quickly then it's not exactly a great loss is it, fifteen quid. It'd see you through to the summer at least anyway.

You will probably find the 'heavy duty' chain comes with only a split link. If the chain on your bike at the moment is also held together with a split link (which is pretty likely it being a Superdream), then you will not need a special tool.

I am personally thinking of saving my money and buying a Heavy Duty one, after all its gonna cost bugger all if it wears out quicker than a chain double its price.

And I do look after my bike even though its my hack its maintenance is kept up.

Don't blame you, I have a HD on my GSXF600, it isn't gold/blue/red, and it has a split link. I lube it every week and clean it monthly. Its been on the bike for a year and it will probaly still be there this time next year.

IME X-ring's aren't worth the price premium, I was quite dissapointed in the life of an AFAM X-ring chain, and I did look after it

Currently using a DID o-ring, which seems good though I've only had it on a few thousand km's.

Vote for the HD here if you get a scotoiler or similar, otherwise go for the O-ring. He also says has your current chain got a split link in it?

X rings are better as they hold the lube better.
Now then, heres an interesting concept, lube kits ,, they dont work on x ring chains as the chains hold lube in, there for keep lube out, what you need is lube that starts off thin and sets, unlike scot oil,

Lubing daily should be OK on an HD I am being told.

He also says if you're looking at it that often and close enough to lube it how can you not have seen a split link? So it might be the original one.......

I am pretty sure its the original chain and sprockets on the bike, like everything else I've discovered that needs replacing.

Whats the difference between split link and rivet link and do I need a tool for split link?

no, split link is made up of you r normal parts and a link that can be prised open using a screw driver,
PLEASE NOTE ON SAFETY GROUNDS
the you must when puting the chain back anf a new split link that you have the open end facing away from the front of the bike
