Was on a slight excursion over the border on Sunday, only the second time Ive ever been to Scotland, and I just cant help but notice that... Theyre all bloody miserable!

Standing in a random sweet shop in a place called Moffatt, like 8 middle aged male staff members stood in silence and watched us, and even walked to the window and watched us get back in the car.

If you get on a bus in Newcastle you'll get a "Where to, pal?"... In Edinburgh you just get an angry stare, and some abrupt abuse if you pay with incorrect change.

Im only commenting on casual social encounters, I've never asked a scotsman for spare petrol or medical help or anything. Any scots care to comment, is it just "the Scotish way" to not talk much?

Other than that, the roads looked bloody awesome for riding on, pretty thin but well tarmaced and rarely hedgelined (good visibility). Wouldn't like to ride alone as it gets a bit lonely out there.

Just trying to understand; No bad Karma I hope Very Happy

Moffat is too shortbread tin for its own good. They probably thought you were going to commit some inpropriety and were stood watching with their letter to the cooncil-writing hand twitching. Moffat is worth going to only by way of proceeding directly to 'The Devils Beeftub' road to Penicuick with a full tank of petrol and some sticky rubber.

Edinburgh bus drivers? They are nothing but a bunch of whinging militants anyway. Even the TGWU told them they were being unreasonable about their last strike. Besides, if one in three people you met in Edinburgh was Scottish I would be surprised.

Ahh good to hear. Youre right about Edinburgh having very few Scottish people, and I suppose the populus of Moffat probably do feel like theyre a novelty for tourists to stare at momentarily.

One day Ill take the bike further afield in that direction, for the roads if nothing else.

I have to say though, if Italy were more local... Laughing

You're right in your observations of some people up here, we notice it ourselves, you go in somewhere, a shop, pub, cafe, whatever and you get the impression they wish you'd never come in, its no wonder tourists come once and don't come back. Why do these people work in a place where they have to deal with the public if they can't f***** smile.
As has already been mentioned, you'll struggle to find a true scots in the centre of Edinburgh, the same possibly goes for places like Moffat too.

Im Scottish, and ive done my nice deed for the week. Was walking to the top of the road to get picked up (this road is massive and unopened due to the estate being new, will be good for the bike Cool ) Anyhoo, at the top of the road theres a roundabout, with a car pulled in at the side, fair enough i thought. Next thing the guy hops out and asks for a push, we manage to get it almost off the roundabout on to the road when we hit an incline, next thing some chappy comes over and helps us. Turns out they ran out of petrol, next thing i know some random person in a tiny little suzuki van pulls up and asks if they've broken down, and gives the dude a lift to the petrol station.

If people seem unhappy, i blame the emo's Laughing

Some english regions can be tw*ts in my opinion, generaly north of Nottingham people will give you the time and chat.

Around London, everyone's miserable. (sister lives there and I go often).

Saying that was in Southampton last week and some nice people down there.

Not been to Scotland for about a year, last time I got starred at when in a chippe I asked for a chip buttie., then I tried chip t-cake again a stare, then a chip barm again a stare, then I asked for chips with bread and got "What you want chips with bread" (Like I was mad). Funny thing was the chip shop sold mars bars. You know what they do with them up there.

It's not just me then. Laughing
I'm Scottish but I am now only posting in the main section until I can find lodgings in one of the English or Welsh sections at BCF.

Some of my countrymen (ladies I think) are wimps and miserable too.

I will be putting my name down for a place south of the border in the coming new year.
The folks down there are so much more welcoming. Laughing

BTW Moffat is full of misery that's why we built it there.
Come to Glasgow enroute to the West Coast Track Circuit.

Generally speaking I find places like edinbvrgh good fun - the only place I ever meet Scots on the Royal Mile is in the many bars - standing next to me.

The west coast is a shite sight better. From a Paisley mans perspective the people are friendlier and more helpful. For instance on the night bus home (no 9) from the pubs and clubs people from all backgrounds, goths, bams, students, oldies were singing christmas songs and havin plenty of banter - a side which tourists wouldnae see.

Only a month ago I left my parking light on and was about to push my bike up a really steep hill to bump start it, a drunk guy gave us a hand and was sick at the top of the hill - wouldnt even accept a tenner for a taxi.

Depends where you go.

Scottish people are all grumpy.
Its part of their charm.
Smile

And it doesn't matter where (in the world) they live. I have met grumpy Scottish folk down in NZ, and in London as well. My pal Ronnie is a crotchety old git if ever I knew one, and he lives in Ayrshire, but I lurve him to death anyway.

I have a Scottish girl working with me, and she's a crabbit wee lassie at times. But she's also one of my favourites "in the office" despite being less than half my age.

For the most part, I've found them to be the cheeriest and most outgoing types of Poms overall, but Jocks are not happy unless they have something to moan about.

PLUS ... Most of the Scottish people I know never shut up. Always bloody talking, the Jocks.

Gawd luv em.
Cool
