hi there,
its a bit of a long story but ill try and keep it brief.
i have a gilera dna 125cc. its a 2001 reg.
2001 must of been a rare good year to of made the dna's because ours is still running and going fine.
however over the last year it was nto used as much, and was left out side as we had no garage. as a result it deteriorated pretty badly.
it needed a overhaul. its fair to say the only thing that was working fine was the engine.
we found a garage and dealer to do the work as we needed to get the bike through an mot this nov.
the garage was crap!
we only paid 1200 for the bike, but we liked it anougth to try and save it. we were first told it would cost 700 to fix it, but they kept finding more and more wrong with it and labour was mounting up.took then over a month to fix the bike, they kept ordering the wrong parts and then finding more things wrong with it. the bike finally passed the mot and the work cost us 1600!!!!!!
anyhow the bike is back we have finished crying and selling our body parts to fund it!!! (joke but it came pretty close) also had counselling to try and find our small brains asking out selfs why the hell we botherd.
the bike is not right!!!!
we were always able to start the bike by dipping the left break lever, well thats what its always bene like all the scooter we have had. you could also start the bike holding in the right lever at a push.
however the bike has come back, and i was sat on it the other day went to start it dipped the left lever as usual hit the starter nothing happened not a bean!
after hyperventerlating and almost taking a claw hammer to the price of crap i realised that if i dipped the right lever it started, but what a pain in the back padding.
so i call the garage back and they tell me that some bikes do actually start on the right lever and if i dont like what they have done i can take it back and they will fix it at cost.
the man behind the desk who just sells helmets and reads bike mags recons that it is normal.
however after phoning round some other garages for a second opinion it sounds to them like the clutch lever has been dissconeccted on the left. and it passed an mot like this.
we want the bike to be the same it has been for the last 2 years and as it says in the manual.
its almost impossible to start it on a hill as trying to dip the right break lever hit the starter and open the throttle with one hand is a bit of a struggle to say the least.
is the garage fobbing me off?

sorry about the crap spelling
what happened was that we needed the bike to get through an mot because we were using it to commute.
we had 2 options. one was to sell and take what ever we made on in as cash towards a new bike, or the other was to fix it.
we took the bike to the garage where they had a look at it for the day and gave us a list of things that it needed doing.
we got 3 different quotes on the parts and labour from 3 different places. we were looking at 750 to get it through an mot.
so we booked the bike in with the garage that was most competitive with the price but was also a dealer and so able to get the parts in quicker.
the bike went in and my oh went to collect the bike at the end of the day but they said it needed more work than what they origionally said.
now basically because they were stripping the bike down they were finding all sorts of little things. and because they are also an mot centre they were telling us that if we did nto get the bits fixed then they would fail it.
the stupid thing is that if we had just got the bike fixed that first day then took it else where for an mot the mot inspector would never of stripped the bike down to pass it. so we would of got the bike through for less money.
to cut a long story short the bike was in the work shop in bits and they said that we needed to buy more parts to even get it back ridable to the way it was before we took it in. we never wanted to spend more than 900 at the very most, but we were left in a situation where the bike was half finished and so 900 we had already spent would of gone down the drain.
the bike now looks brand new and everything has been replaced apart from the engine that is starting to sound like an old tin can.
the dealer said that after 30,000 miles the engine usually needs an overhaul. the engine has currently done 25,000.
it may last another year who knows.
i realise we have been stupid, i wanted to sell at a loss in the first place but oh wanted to fix it.
thankyou for your time guys! |

yeah they are bastards some of these garages have had similar experiences myself
They must have done some engine work for £1600 should not be sounding rough !
If the bikes kept outside its worth putting a cover over it !
spelling much better ____________________ Yeah I know ! |

certainly i would agree with a previous post, get an itemised receipt but also get them to ring you EVERY time before they so much as touch the bike , I had a garage try and charge me £340 for lowering the front forks to increase aerodynamic effiency ( which was rubbish as you only have to unclamp the forks on either side and push them up a bit and it does save tme and money , oh btw get assurance that they know what they are doing ( read the manual before asking them to fix it , then if they say the clutch is bust or whatever you will know that they haven't got a clue finally get it checked independently first so that they don't "find any non existent faults and if they do , threaten to sue them ,it works ____________________ when the going gets tough , the "tough" get lost ; be what you are guys and gals |
