I have a TZR 250 (3MA - Underseat exhausts). Do I replace it with an RS250 or should I just modify the TZR?
Is there a huge performance difference between the 2?

not much between them performance wise, but the rs is a more reliable machine i would suspect.

Did I read that right? An Italian bike that is more reliable that a Japanese one? Wow!
I have 45000km's on the TZR, never let me down other than 2 accelerator cable snapping in 6 years. I have yet to open up the motor. I guess new pistons and rings are due.

Oh, I am Italian!

Very true NBO. However we have very few 250's here in South Africa. Parts are a bitch to get for any make. They were never officially imported. I want to get some track time and I'm not sure if I should do something to the TZR or just put a stock RS on the track instead...

I would of thought an RS250 would be a lot better around the track, but for exclusivity the TZR wins it for me. I've never seen one on the road, ever.

I almost bought an RG400 with a 465cc big bore kit, Swarbrick pipes and uprated suspension last year, but passed after a good think about it, the maintenance would have crippled me. Now that would of been exclusive. The guy's still got it as well, just think it'll need a LOT of work to get it back on the road really.

RS250's dead cheap on maintenance Smile.
Especially if you only use it as a weekend/track toy Smile.

But surely thrashing the fuck out of an already highly tuned 2T motor round a track isn't going to help when it comes to rebuilds? I can see it getting pretty expensive if you binned it as well.

Thrashing the fuck out of the RS is what stops it from fouling the plugs. See "Highly tuned 2T motor". Keep it between 10k and redline, and you'll be fine Smile.

Keeping the RS in the powerband doesn't count as abuse. It's what the motor was designed for.
If the needle's before the redline, you're not redlining it - the engine can handle it Smile.

you heard right.

the rs uses an rgv motor, and the 3ma is commonly refered to as the reverse seizure

That is true. The TZR is very unhappy out the powerband. Ride it traffic and it gets really uncooperative! Sounds like I already have a winner. Just needs decent breaks, tyres and a track fairing. Fairings are impossible to find here so I may stick an old R6 one on....

I'm aware of the RGV motor in the Aprilia. What is reverse seizure?

they are a reverse cylinder (carbs at the front, yes) and are renowned for siezing if left for a long time on the side stand (lack of oil to one of the cylinders) thus earning itself the nickname reverse seizure

if yours has gone 47k with no problems congratulations you must look after it well, if thats the case keep it. Very Happy

Mine does spend a lot of time on the sidestand. Should I rather put it on a paddock stand then?
Funny thing is I kill the poor motor every time I ride it. Maintenance consists of an oil change and plugs once a year. Clean up the filters and leave it at that! Major stuff gets done when it needs something. I don't even use the best 2T oil!
Maybe I'm just lucky till now!
