Hi all, sounds like a bizarre question, but can someone give me a rough idea as to what the primary and secondary reduction ratio is on a bike and when they are used and how they work... and is their a final gear ratio?

cheers for any help guys

for the R6.

The first reduction is the primary drive between the clutch and the gearbox so far as I am aware. The secondary in this case is the final drive chain, the ratio between the sprockets (45 teeth on the rear, 16 on the front).

The final drive ratio is the ratio between the front and rear sprockets for a motorcycle. On a car this includes the differential. You have to match the gear ratios to the engine characteristics to get the drive characteristics you're after.

By reducing the drive speed before you go near the gearbox, the ratios in the box can be smaller, so the gears on the primary shaft and the layshaft can be more similar in size, reducing the size of the box. You can also put the gearbox behind the clutch rather than in line with it, i.e. on the back of the engine rather than sticking out the side in line with the crankshaft.
