Telegraph story

Not good, for any of you tourers!

What bugs me is the huge amount of money it will cost. The expense of liason and data-sharing between european police departments and our own forces, plus enforcement, must surely more than eat up the cost of any fines.[/url]

To be fair, we complain if they set out to make money from speeding fines, so can't complain too much if they're not.

I'm still not too bothered providing you don't get points.

I don't care whether they make or lose money, in theory. In practise, the police ignore most crime because they claim not to have the resources to chase it up. Now they will be made to enforce the fines and punishments of another country, wasting yet more resources that could be used to improve our country's standard of living.

The European points systems are becoming more and more aligned with ours, it wouldn't suprise me if points started coming with the fines shortly after it's introduced.

In Finland you don't get points, but you do get fined based on your earnings last tax year. Last year, a rich brat was ordered to pay a fine of 170,000 euros (about £118,000)after being caught doing 80 km/h in a 40km/h zone!

The police & the courts have access to the Finnish Inland Revenue database, so this can be done, but doubt they'd get the data from the UK, so they'd just impose the fixed penalty.

Yes but in Finland, if your a house wife, you can get off with something like a €30 fine.

This happend recently to some Formula 1 racing drivers, wife or girlfriend.

I was in Helsinki last month. Also managed to see a ice hockey match with Helsinki Jokerit.

Yes, Mika Hakkinen's wife a couple of years ago. He himself wasn't as lucky!

My home team, one that I've been supporting since the early 70s when they were still unfashionable. What did you think of the hockey? Good game, eh? I miss playing it!
