Hey everyone i'm thinking of treating myself a GPS system for the bike. I intend to spend around 300 to 350 on a dedicated unit.

The only thing is that i have found two i like the look of the Garmin 2620 and one of the tom-tom go units does anyone know what they are like to use and how to go about fixing the tom-tom unit to the bike as the Garmin one comes with a bracket and the other one doesn't. tom-tom rider is just too expensive.

So really i'm just after advice from someone whos used the above.

Cheers in advance. Very Happy

i'm not a fan of garmins...not sure why really.

tomtomgo's are ace but they're not waterproof mind. also you may have trouble hearing the instrucitons since the GO has no headphone socket...although i did see a post over @ pocketgps.co.uk were a guy modified a tomtomgo dock to accept and headphone plug so it can be done.
you'd have a make your own bracket or try RAM mounts, https://www.ram-mount.com/ , they might have something suitable.

I've got an iPAQ 4150 with TomTom software and a bluetooth GPS unit (about the size of a matchbox). I needed the iPAQ anyway and had fancied the GPS for ages. This kind of solution would come to around 200-250 quid and you get a bigger screen and the use of the PDA compared with the dedicated TomTom unit (there are loads of iPAQs on Ebay, unused presents and the like). The software is the same as that in the dedicated units - I'm very happy with it, although you do occasionally come across bits of road that have changed since the map data was last updated.

Anyway, on to the bit I can answer for you:

Have a look at:

https://www.ram-mount-uk.com/

for mounting solutions, and have a look at:

https://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

for more information on TomTom and other GPS systems

Garmin are the best made gps units on the market bar none, software is allot better than it was but not the best.. it will however put up with more shit than any other unit, not convinced of any others durability, ive had a few different garmins, dropped them from head hight onto concrete, used them in wind, rain, snow, hail, they can be put in 1meter of water for 20minutes with no ill effect...

If your going to get a mount the ram is brilliant, makeing your own bracket you should be carefull to mount it propperly, anything electronic will not respond well to the vibes, no point risking it.

Ipaqs are ok but a dedicated unit you can use your gloves and push buttons without any messing about while your at lights e.t.c. i dont rate their chances highly if used often or in the wet (condensation e.t.c.) unless you have a very very watertight box for it, but then see above..

IMO the only one to go for on a bike at the moment is the Garmin Quest.

V pricey, hence I don't have one.

Other bike ones:
Garmin streetpilot 1,2 or 3.
Tom tom Rider.

I'm waiting till the price goes down. I'm thinking it will soon a lot but that's just a hunch.

I've modified a garmin streetpilot i3 for use on my bike. Opened it up and replaced the speaker with an extension wire and an earphone socket. I am going to place it in a ziploc bag with some moisture absorbing sachets, and fix it with velcro straps between the fairing and the instrument panel. The cigarette lighter power chord has already been hard wired to the battery. and brought out to the instrument panel. It's not the most elegant setup for a bike, but at £169 is probably the best VFM. I especially like the feature on the garmin that warns you when you are travelling faster than the speed limit for that road; brilliant. Potential licence saver.

Have a look at this thread.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=58859&highlight=

I keep banging on about it, but I can't rate the Garmin Quest unit highly enough for use on a bike and car.

RAM mount, about 30 quid extra and it'll last all day long fully charged, or wire it in to the bike and run it forever that way.

Waterproof, great and easy to use mapping, including finding petrol stations in the middle of nowhere. Comes complete with full Europe mapping and details on the software, with full UK installed.

My only gripe with it is that you have to update the mapping for where you're going, but its not hardship and allow's you to check you're route at the same time.

It's in your price range too.

Well I've just ordered a RAM mount today. I know they're good (hence my posting the link) but I'd not bothered myself. I've tended to just put my iPAQ in my pocket and get it out when I get lost - to check where I am and which way I should have turned at the last roundabout.

I'll take some pictures when it arrives and I put it on the bike.

Just fitted my RAM mount, so as promised, here are some pictures. I'll take some better ones another day.

PDA holder RAM-HOL-CO4 and mounting bracket RAM-B-149Z (which is made up of RAM-B-231Z, RAM-B-201 and RAM-B-238)

If it rains, I won't be riding. If it starts to rain whilst I'm out, it's very easy to stick in my pocket or wrap in a polythene "sandwich" bag.

As for shock proof - it has been working ok in the car for about a year. It has only been on the bike for a few hours, but given the other reports from iPAQ users on their motorbikes, I have no reason to think it won't be.
