Britain will be first country to monitor every car journey
From 2006 Britain will be the first country where every journey by every car will be monitored
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Published: 22 December 2005

Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years.

Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years.

In the process, the data centre will provide unrivalled opportunities to gather intelligence data on the movements and associations of organised gangs and terrorist suspects whenever they use cars, vans or motorcycles.

wtf , I thought bikes were immune to ANPR? due to the fact bike plates can be at various angles .....

oh

btw I'd like to add

Also, I'd like to insert a cliche: I've got nothing to hide.

Until you get pulled in by the police on a murder charge because you happened to be near a murder scene...

I keep seeing broad laws being passed with people saying "well it's ok for them to be really broad because noone will ever abuse them" and then they get abused _every time_.

For example: does shouting "nonsense" in a political debate make you a terrorist? The government seem to think so

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4292342.stm

. Just days before that happened, the Prime Minister argued that it was ok for the anti-terrorism laws (the same ones used to detain someone for shouting "nonsense") to be so broad because the police would never use them inappropriately.

Canada looks all the more enticing all the time , best sort out my weaknesses and get together 10 grand to be eligable.

What makes them think that gangs, organised crime, terrorists, etc are going to use vehicles that can be traced back to them through a number plate? Even someone doing a bank job generally nicks the getaway vehicle.

bah its just a new tax system ! , much like the new tax rules , didn't bother folks with no tax and cars registered elsewhere , but it did catch an awfullot of normally law abiding people who thought road tax could still be paid in arrears.

Though the iffy part of it is that the system is already partially in place , as revealed via the shooting of PC Beshnivski , and already defeated by crooks when one man was forced to hire a hire car for the crims when his family were held hostage.

Ah, but this way they can arrest everyone who drove near the location of the getaway car when it was stolen.

All the best

As with all methods of crime prevention and detection, there will be ways to avoid or confuse the evidence to make it useless.
Criminals/terrorists will simply take it into account when planning.

I can't see how it could be that reliable anyway.

Oh no, the terrorists are coming to get us!! Thinking

Fuck that, the government are coming to steal our money and stamp down on our liberties, again. This terrorism thing is a load of old bollocks by now, it's only successful because the government and media keep bringing it up and ramming the idea that we're under attack down our throats.

You asked me about a few things on messenger recently. If you continue with the ideas you had start to worry.

Poll tax??? A law is only enforceable if the people choose to accept it. If everyone said 'no' then it soon stops. The poll tax was just one example.

... everyone could remove their numberplates and the system wouldn't work. Neither would road tax, speeding fines etc.

Until everyone decides to organise a national removal of number plates then nationally the public has chosen to accept these systems.

Everything we do is tracked. Our Internet useage, our spending habits, telephone calls, our movements by CCTV. Tracking cars is the next step. ANPR cameras are good but they cannot track every single car and every single journey made.

As dainesefreak has said already, the people who need to be tracked generally do not have number plates that can be traced back. Until anti theft number plates are made the system is flawed.

£30 quid fine for not displaying a number plate?

Can't see that one staying the same for much longer. Also a crack down on small plates probably on the way.

What's the point on spending all this money on the APNR system if they can't read your plate?

Sometimes this Government makes me want to go rioting...

Over the christmas period, this came up with my brother in law, he's a police officer who works with the area cars. From what he was saying the system doesn't read bike plates if they're on two lines, which obviously most bike plates are.

Hooray for legal plates! Dance!

*Edit - An afterthought - If you have slightly different font, or even specks of mud on your plate, it will either mis recognise it or be completely unable to recognise it

Very true, there are factors out of motorists control which will stop this system being entirely effective. Heavy rain, fog, mud on the roads which flicks up onto the numberplate.

It's a clever new system which will undoubtedly reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road; obviously a good thing, but it's hardly foolproof!

ANPR is just the tip of the iceberg, now your mot is computerised its linked with DVLA and all insurance holdings database, so now they know when you are legal what your bike should look like and the insurance database holds details of any mods you have declared on your vehicle. Get stopped now and the police can see if you've declared the mods on your motor, if not you are not insured! Same as no mot, if you dont have that then you are not insured. Next time you get the chance just look at the equipment inside a traffic car, you reckon that pc screen will just display your name and address!? Thinking Remember on a bike they will stop you for no reason, just because they can and once they have you at the roadside......................... Rain

The system still doesn't work as it should. Its normally at least 2 weeks out of date. The PNC as I understand it is not linked to the DVLA system but has updates tapes uploaded weekly.

None of my bikes are declared modified and yet they all are in one way or another and all are still fully insured.

The police do not have access to engineers reports that are done on modified bikes (you did get one done didn't you?) and over this would not notice many of the modifications done to many bikes.

Lets have an example here.

I have a GSXR1100N. I've fitted wheels off the later 750srad. I tell my insurance company they say no worries mate, its not performance related and doesn't raise the value so no loading just put it in writing so its on file.

Do you really think this gets passed on to the police and if so do you think they could tell the difference?

The only MOD the police care about are ones done badly that are dangerous

I think this is already happening Neutral

Was in the Sainsburies petrol station in Bristol yesterday where they had a small sign stating they had ANPR in operation that was automatically linked to a police database.

Because I am paranoid, and just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.

Although it all sounds a little scary.

I don't think there is much other way it will go, unless we all go back about 20years technologically.

The stuff is there to do it.
Any group who is in charge will use it to some extent or another.

Not transport specific anymore but people will just get used to this new technology and it will become as dull as the rest. Telephones probably scared a lot of people when they were first out. But we accept em happily now.

This is just to alarm police about people who drive away without paying. They seem to be taking it very seriously now!
