well if you are getting it brand new then i wouldnt think reliabilty would be too bad on a rs if its brand new. nsr wont give you many problems at all for definate tho

Get an NSR mate, they are slightly slower than the RS but it is more comfortable and reliable and cheaper to run. Very Happy

I've heard of more low mileage RSs having problems than low mileage NSRs .. though this may be due to the owners than the bike though.

Do you actually need a new bike? (some places do finance on older ones as well)
A bank loan for say £1k would get you a fairly tidy example of the older model NSR. It may not look as good, but it will have a lot lower insurance, you will be less bothered when you crash and you will get a much better resale value in comparison to what you paid.
If you're buying new be prepaired to watch £500 of the bikes value disapear as you push it out of the dealerships door... and this is £500 that it will presumably take a while to repay Confused

Yeah, deffo go for a bank loan rather than dealer finance. You can get a bankloan for about 7%... or finance between 12 and 18% generally.

Plus, with finance, you have to pay it off before you can sell the bike (to get it off the HPI register), with a bankloan you dont - you're probably thinking right now "oooh I'll never sell it" but you will and odds are it'll be well before the finance period is over (probably 3 years).

I bought my previous bike on finance, and when I bought my current bike I had to pay off the old one first before I could trade it in... and after 9 months of paying £100 a month I'd succeeded in paying exactly £347 of the actual loan amount off Confused Needless to say, the current wheels were paid with a bank loan!

or you could just igore the expensive 125, get the cheapest 125 you can find to do your test (eg MZ for 150 quid), then spend a grand on summat nice when youve got your licence.

125 prices are horribly overinflated for what they are.

bear in mind you will also need to buy insurance, helmet, and at least a bike jacket for protection - i dunno how old you are but insurance will be a minimum of about 200 quid tpo on an absolute dog, and 600 quid tpft on an NSR.

check www.biketrader.co.uk and www.ebay.co.uk

I'm 19 mate no no claims and on my provisional. I will probably pay th insurance in instalments and i've already got a lid and jacket that i use when i go out with my mates. What sort of year NSR or RS 125 could i get for a grand if they go that cheap. The most i could really stretch to leaving myself skint for a while would be 1500.

a grand wouldn't get you an RS, and at 1500 it would be a ratty one. you could get a 10 year old NSR, which is the same as the new ones just looks different.

or for about 600 quid you could get yourself a nice NS (forerunner to the NSR, i had one, good bikes), or a yamaha TZR (the fastest out of the bunch if its got the powervalve servo hooked up).

all the sports 125s are pretty much the same, and nothing much has changed in the last 10 years. So why not go for a cheap 125, get cheap insurance, and keep some cash back for your test.

at the end of the day, 125s suck, and 2 strokes break a lot.

Hi

The RS has been in production for 11 years. You should be able to find one for £1K, but dont expect a nice one. The NSR has been out for longer, plus there was the unfaired version which is cheaper again. There are also the older Aprilia AF1s, and also the Europa which was basically an unfaired AF1 Futura

Go and look at both, sit on both and twiddle the buttons on both, and decide which you like most. They are both good bikes

All the best

Keith
