the CDI unit on my bike said it only revs to 7.5K but its actually unlimmited but it is a geared 50.
to test it, stick ya ped on the centre stand after a ride out sothat your engine is warm...and rev the knackers off it, it is sounds like the revs stop increasing, then ull need to do something about it, but if they steadily increase or just fly up uv not got a problem...ull just need a race exhaust

got a leo vinci exhaust, mines got a digi display tells me my revs. say im plodding along on the flat doing 47 ish the odd time it comes up like 10,000 rpm then big letters over boost then oh no engine turns off. get the idea ? quite annoying.

edit: and yes when you do that on the stand they fly up and then stop Neutral its really fast at bottom end for a 50cc but when you hit 40 ish the revs seem to fade then just crawls the rest of the way Sad

loads say cut the wires Neutral

on my mates scooter, we did cut a pink wire. this improved the revs. cut it, and if nothing happens, stick it back together.

If I remember rightly, this was a trick used on the very early minarelli style engine cdi's upto about 1996, thereafter they started using a different cdi on them!

So if your bike is pre 96 then go ahead and cut it, but Im guessing it isnt by your avater pic, so in your case there wont be one!

Have you removed the 2 washers in the variator yet?

Some scoots have a washer in the variator, which physically stops it moving any more.

Maybe ebay have some CDIs for cheap. Then if you do bugger it up you got a spare.

An also as its an automatic, the revs don't change dramatically, as I belive the variator moves back and forwards to change resistance and revs about the same.

Unless your bike is one of the piaggio fuel injected engines you dont need to change your cdi, you would only change it if you had a engine in a high state of tune, so as a result of this forget anything about cdi's for the time being!

Cdi's used to be restricted as on of the methods used to stop it going over 30mph, but now they just normally have 2 washers in the variator, either a cone in the manifold of the exhaust of a long tube sticking off it, and occasionally some other manufacturers may restrict the carb flow some what!

You say you have a leo vince pipe on, did you change the rollers when fitting this pipe and the jetitng to suit? Obviously the lighter the rollers the more accelleration you will get and the heavier the more top end, the hard part comes trying to find a balance of these two factors, when I had my Runner 172 it took me a long time to get this right!

And you deffo believe the shop when they say its fully de-restricted, take the cover and have a look for yourself!

From His name and pic, i'll guess he's riding a malaguti firefox. Each scooter will have its own way of being restricted. The honda XR8 was restricted by the CDI and that is pretty old now. The new peugeots have a restricted CDI, too. If the shop that derestricted it said you need a new CDi, chances are that they're right (being professionals, unlike the majority of, if not all, the people in this thread).

Get information specifically on your scooter.

As far as I know the variator is desogned to let the engine stay in its power band all the time. I would expect the peak power output to be well over 7.5K on a 50CC 2T engine though. Many scoots have the variator restricted as mentioned above, look here first.

Some of the peugeot CDI's I believe can be reprogramed with the right softare and a play station portable (I think it's a PSP) but very few places have the software.

I'd personally wouldnt touch it.. I got a geared 50 and the sprockets to small and when I go a bit mental i end up redlineing it alot in 6th gear.. I then had a heat seize and now my bike keeps cutting out if it gets to hot ( when i mean by hot i mean by after 30 mins of riding) even lough its water cooled..
