This isn't a bike I'm familiar with; which is strange considering it's relatively common.

Anyway, I'm starting to look at bikes which I'm considering getting when I pass my test. And I saw this when I stopped off at the local shop today.

Yamaha Diversion
L reg
33k
Red, with manky yellow wheels which will need a powder coat
A few marks, but not all that bad.

£850 - I could probably get him down to £800 if I bought it; that or £900 and do the wheels and replace the grips, or something.

What do you guys think? Keep in mind it isn't a private sale so I expect the price to be a little higher. My main concern is; would this be a decent choice for a first bike, as I want to spend maybe 2 or 3 months on it, that's all, before I hop on something more expensive.

Smile Thumbs Up

got one as my first bike and was fine, mine is an N reg and got it for £700 private
now use it as a work hack, as an alternative you could look at a GPZ500 for a bit more of a fun bike

Hi

I had one. I sold mine with about 45k on the clocks for £850, but it was a faired one in pretty good condition with a rack and top box, along with heated grips and virtually new tyres.

The vacuum operated fuel pump is a waste of space. The seat is comfy. They are not fun to ride but are a very good bike for cruising down a motorway.

All the best

Keith

Thanks guys. Keith, when you say it's not a fun bike, relatively will it keep me entertained for a couple of months? As when/if I buy it, my on-road experience will consist of 50s and 4T 125s. Laughing

The GPZ is an interesting alternative WN, I'm also considering a GS. Confused

Hi

Handling wise it was fine, it was just that the engine had nothing in the power delivery to make it interesting in the slightest. You revved it harder and it made slightly more power. I just found it frustrating.

All the best

Keith

far from bullet proof, the electrics are terrible in 90% of divvys i see in for services, obviously they have been around the block a few times by now.

worth looking at a few of the block connectors as they start to rot, especially under the right hand side tail piece, look at the fuse box normally a good indicator of the overal state of things

The fueling system is a bit of a joke and gives problems regularly, and ive lost count of the amount of fork seaks ive replaced.

The bike itself isnt bad handling is ok for such a heavy lump, not amazing but certainly could be worse. Very comfortable to ride.

If u do get one make sure its not got the "optional" lower fairing kits, not only do they look like a drunken plasterer has attacked it, but they cause the bike to overheat.

Good way to maintain them is to fit a fender extender, keeps all the water out from under the tank and gives the coils and easier life.

From a service side of things there pretty straight forward, but make sure the one your looking at has had its valves done at 24k, the tolerances are huge on the divvys so it probably wouldnt have done it anyharm if the valves were not done... your just be looking at a bill probably in excess of 50% of what u just paid for it.

all the best

Thinking

I might have to snatch this up, it sounds like an excellent bike for a few months. And it's only 5 miles from my house.

Rolling Eyes Course, it'll take me another month to scrape together the cash, so it might have gone by then. Doh!

as you have seen a few of them just wondering if you could clear something up, mine has a hole in the rev range about the 4K maek, do you recon this is due to carbs not being balanced of value clearence?
cheers

what u mean by hole? if your talking role ons? carb icing is a problem this time of yeah, other than that could just be balancing for valves to cause anything like that it would happen through out the range as the vavle clearence would be wrong throughout the range.

yeah from low to high revs there seems to be a dip in power around the 4K mark, could be the icing like you say as never noticed it before in the summer months, maybe a carb balence wouldn't hurt.
Cheers
