When i press the ignition switch the bike wont start, i have ruled out the solenoid as it has been replaced, although when i bridge the connectors with the keys turned (neutral light comes on) it starts, it also bumps very easily in 2nd.
I have a '96' diversion s and when i push the switch the oil light comes on while i have the button pushed down but it has always done that but something in the switch must be working, everything else works fine with keys turned(indicators, lights, horn) but no noises or firing.
Has anyone encountered this problem before or have an idea as to what i can look for?

Possibly a faulty sidestand cut-off switch ? If I try and start my XJ600n in gear with the sidestand down I get the same symptoms. Mind you, it probably wouldn't bump start in that case Confused

Get a multimeter out and check the starter ciruit isn't broken or having some kind of earthing problem.

Did you check the kill switch? If not that it could be a bad battery, if you are sure the solenoid is not faulty.

Just because lights come on does not mean the battery's fine, I've thrown away batteries that show 12.8 volts standing, yet they are unable to deliver the needed current to turn the starter over, even showed as good when charged with an Optimate, if you try to jump start it with a known good battery it will help eliminate that possibility.

Common prob with the divvys, check the relay starter should be under the right side pannel area, i have the older version and the relay is a silver cicrcular one, the conectors can become easily corroded. simple clean sorts it out.

Had a corroded starter relay connector the other week.

Take off the rear panel, grab handle and rear right panel. Then check the front black relay block. Take it off the rubber clip from the frame and wiggle the connector out. check the blue-white cables and connectors for corrosion (mine had totally rotted through) and make sure it's nice and dry in there. slot it all back together if it looks ok and try again.

My starter button to relay cable had rotted away and took out the connector in the block. What I did was chop into the connection bit of the relay with a hacksaw and snapped off a 5mm strip of the housing so I could get access to the terminal on the relay. Then I cut a corresponding hole in the connector, knocked up a "bypass cable" and connected it up to the terminal. Once done I could plug the connector back in and splice the bypass cable into the wiring loom. Then sealed it all up with sillicone and Duct tape.

Works a treat.

I spoke to a garage who said it was a common fault and their fix of choice was to crop all the cables and re-wire directly to the terminals.

K.
