I couldn't get the SV to start this morning. Choke full on, throttle 1/4 open, nothing. For ten minutes. It usually kicks in to life after about 5 minutes once the carb heaters have warmed up, but not this morning.

Luckily I have my trusty NSR to hand, which was not fazed by the cold at all, and started with nay a stutter! 4 strokes, reliable? Hah! And Mim called the stroker a pile of junk. Got me to work this morning!

Looks like I'll be getting the Optimate out tonight then.

My CBR4 hates the cold. It seems to kill the battery Confused

I tried starting it up on saturday, and all I got was a massive backfire, followed by a flat battery. Crying or Very sad

I don't have a garage, I just put a cover over the bikes to keep the weather out.

Have you tried not opening the throttle at all with full choke? When you use full choke, shouldn't open the throttle, it works everytime for me in the cold mornings Thumbs Up

No, I only open the throttle slightly if I'm having no luck when closed. It's not usually a problem, and will start up with choke on after a couple of turnovers.

I haven't tried it yet. I got to work using the NSR, so I'll have to wait until 10 tonight to try (evening duty tonight Mad )

It was running fine last night after I fitted a new air filter. I think maybe it was more asleep than me at 8 this morning and couldn't be arsed to move Mr. Green

I haven’t rode my VFR for a few months.
It has gone through Christmas and the winter in a lock up.
I get her out, hit the button and hear the music again.

ZXR hadn't been started for 2 weeks. Press the button and it starts like it was running only yesterday. Cool

I never use the choke on my bandit. Just blip the throttle to keep the revs around 1-2k.

Try turning it over with no choke and no throttle. When it fires you need to instantly get on the throttle but carefuly so that you don't stall it. This method is what I've found to be the most reliable for starting my own bike on cold mornings.

It's something to do with the colder air being denser and therefore more oxygen getting down the throttles etc.......or summat like that Laughing

Oh Yeah, and my Thundercat starts immediately on full choke, no matter how cold it is!

My SV is fine, a bit of choke somtimes and she fine, when cold she idles 900rpm (on very cold days) so let her stand with a bit of choke on to get her warmed (then idles 1500rpm)

Try putting the choke on before you cover it up for the night, it helps keep the cold damp air out of the carbs and should help it start easier in the morning. As said you shouldn't need any throttle to start it on full choke, if its set up right the choke will already raise the tickover anyway.

My KLE started pretty smart this morning and it was absolutley covered in frost.......no cover on it Sad took about 2.5 sec's of cranking and more or less immediatley back off the choke halfway. As soon as I set off then I knock it off altogether.

It sounds to me like your bike just needs a bit of TLC Wink

The Blade always starts first time, even after standing. The Varadero seems OK but the battery was flat when I bought it and it has an alarm.

Cheers
