Anyone else tried out super unleaded in their bikes? This weekend just for a change i decided to fill up with super unleaded, thats the 97 RON stuff not the BP Leaner type stuff. What a difference it "seems" to have made.

My Thundercat used to get a bit of a knocking/tapping noise whilst cold, but since putting in 2 tanks of super the noise has gone. As for performance up at the top end of the revs it just seems to have more kick and a load more down the bottom end of the range. Is it just me or does the sports 600's benefit from a higher octane fuel.

My Cat likes Super or even Optimax but the FZR hates it, it actually does about 1 mile per litre less on it and seems to loose its edge, most peculiar but it is an old bike.

Hi

Without a knock sensor to adjust the ignition timing higher octane petrol alone should not give you any extra power at all (indeed it should have a slightly lower energy content so should loose you a tiny bit of power, not that you are likely to notice with road fuels).

All the best

Keith

I always use the shell optimax stuff, only because I wouldn't really notice the price difference with the amount I use.
In the top gear test on these fuels the optimax came out on top with a big increase in power...but that was in an Impreza turbo.
There was a thread a while back on this if you search.

I always believe my bike sounds better, revs more freely and has more power once I've just filled it up but that's probably in my head....the satisfaction of knowing it's not going to konk out any minute!!

That car has a knock sensor and can adjust the boost / ignition timing to take advantage of the higher octane fuel unlike most bikes. Without that the higher octane rating does nothing.

What you might find is that the additive package is more effective at keeping the engine clean.

All the best

And it made bugger all difference on a standard hatchback Wink

The detergents in it will, in the long run, keep the engine in better nick. But any performance increase you felt was most likely psychosomatic. Razz

Used to use it in my RVF; didn't feel anymore powerful, but did feel slightly crisper on the throttle.

Or a bottle of Redex used every three or four fillups. I have a bottle that's lasted ages. Must remember to get some more.

How much redex should you be using each time?

i've used optimax and similar super unleaded for about a month and niticed a big decrease in fuel consumption, i got 200+ km to a tank whereas with normal i get 180km tops.

Caught me out as well because when i changed back to see if there was a difference still i got caught out when the bike run outta petrol at like 175km Sad

So i think for the amount extra per fill up im going back to the optimax, apaprt from fuel consumption though i felt no other benefits

The bottle says 10ml for every 10 litres. I only use it every few fillups though.

Did think it might all be in the head Laughing , though it definitely felt crisper, smoother on the throtle. And with the annoying engine tick having gone it's got to be doing some good.

From Shells old advertising for Optimax it is not just super unleaded, and the extra octane rating is only a small point in its favour.

All the best

My ER5 didn't like it at all, was glad to get rid of the stuff.

Pitty my car thrives on the stuff.

(Plus for Car MOT, make sure its got Optimax in it and give it a good 10 mile motorway speed thrashing, before immissions on MOT).

i use Shell Optimax all the time, i don't expect to get a power increase out of it but the main reason i use it is because it has a cleaning agent in it.
