Just wondering how many people here don't like taking their bikes on gravel? Personally it freaks me out, especially when it is that really loose gravel, with the thick rocks. Is it better to just avoid it or are sportsbikes able to ride on gravel??

don't love it but find it a challange, i have ridden my 7R on the gravel drive to my rowing club and find it ok, just keep the revs up and slip the clutch, have the rear brake on for stability and don't make sudden steering movements or you may loose the front end.
probibly best if you are not confident on it to find and alternative route but if not take is slow and have your feet stabilising you on either side just incase

Deep mud is slippy. There's a muddy lane I drive down sometimes and it can be fun. Spinning up all over the place.

Hate gravel, first spill on this bike was because of some gravel on the road Thumbs Down

Gravel in the middle of the road is a real sh!tter moment.
Nothing worse than leaning round a corner only to see a 6 foot length of gravel right in your path. Evil or Very Mad

I hate gravel, my parents have a thick gravel driveway and it freaks me out, the bike just seems to go against it. Did a turn on it once on the old CG and it just went over like a pushbike so take it dead steady now when ever I go down to visit. Apart from ice its the only surface I hate.

Aye, gravel is hellish.

Last time, I had to go up a sidewalk full of gravel and just wasn't expecting the bike to dance like a snake, got caught by surprise and couldn't keep her upright. Laughing

U got to love gravel for all the fun u can have...

Power slides.
Skids.
The huge clouds of dust in the summer.
The adrenaline as u almost stack it.
and so on. Laughing

If u stay below about 25 your fine in less it is that really deep stuff that stuff sucks just don’t even attempt to go over that.

Just don’t make any sudden steering movements; harsh breaking or accelerating or lean and u will be fine.

Gravel is okay, providing you don't do anything but ride over it (the first couple of times I binned my 125 were the result of braking on gravel). It helps to be able to change your line mid-corner if you see gravel coming up too.

Mud on the other hand seems to have a mind of it's own, even just a sniff of throttle sees the back end going sideways, and using the front brake is a complete non-starter.

offroad with a trial bike Thumbs Up

took a really really rubbish 125 trialy for some offroad abuse on a gravel byway, was quite alot of fun even when i stacked it through a hedge going about 30 2-up, pulled myself out the ditch with a massive grin on my face!, having to push the bike back 2 miles when it munched up the spark plug wasnt fun though Mad

My mate at works best friend lost his life due to gravel. From what I understand he was going along a country lane (left hander) hit the gravel around the centre line and low sided into an oncoming lorry. I didn't know the bloke but it scares the pants out of me whenever I see in on the road now

I go out of my way to play on it. Slow speed drives arn't much fun, but single track roads with a center line of gravel are Thumbs Up Thumbs Up .

Gravel in the form of a trap is interesting, entered one at Donnington at about 65 Shocked , I've never had a bike violently shaking fron side to side, from both ends at the same time, at speed, not funny at all.

So all in all, no, I don't like gravel much Sad

Did you drop it into the gravel? I can't think why it'd get that high otherwise.

There is no grass on side. Its just awful big thick gravel, with patches of dirty holes and ditches. My cousin rode on it just fine, but he appears to be 1000 times more co-ordinated on it than me. I will get him to ride it off the gravel for me, even though Ill feel like a retard for asking

Its fun on gravel but not on the road it is annoying and dangerous and generally makes me have a heart attack when i ride over it and bike starts to slip etc!

Dont go playing on it unless you dont mind your bike full of scratches though Razz

More than anything it's a matter of confidence.

Try not to panic about the gravel, that just makes it worse.

Jon has a gravel drive full of holes and mud which terrified me the first time I pulled onto it. Now I am used to just riding as smoothly as possible. Just don't brake heavily or try to change direction quickly.

it was my friend would missed a gear at paddock hill bend at brands hatch. He went wide into the gravel. He was fine until he touched the front brake then down he went. It took the rest of the day to sort the bike so we could get him home. His sholder was in a bad way.

Gravel everywhere. Not one body panel anygood Sad

Unexpected gravel on the road is lethal (yeah yeah safety nazis, I know you should expect everything).

When it's a drive or a track or whatever it isn't that bad. Just be careful and only use the rear brake to slow down. When you're going up hill on it use a constant throttle, enough to keep the bike moving without the rear wheel spinning too much.
