I suppose engine damage is slightly better than the chain wrapping itself round the rear wheel and throwing you up the road.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move but should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move but does, use the Duct Tape.

I was due to replace the chain and sprockets next w/e, so I just thought "Oh it'll do until then."

Coming out of the garage after filling up at lunchtime yesterday the chain hopped off the rear sprocket and started making crunchy/grindy noises. Luckily, I was only doing about 15-20mph at the time so managed to get the clutch in and pull over.

I've managed to split the crankcase cover and duff up the clutch cable, still waiting to get the figure for fixing it all. I suspect it's going to be an expensive lesson to learn...

mistakes are made by everybody here, and im sure that bazza is well aware of how close he came to an off.

I think bazza is simply warning us about what can happen if you dont replace your chain and sprockets and have them correctly adjusted.

Basically "dont do what I just did because these are the consequnces"

Usually these chain things are fine. Then a pillion gets on and the weight makes the chain hang slacker than usual. So that's why they fly off and hit pillions rather than riders.

Not a criticism. Just a scenario that has happened and I'm glad it didn;t happen to you.

Mmmmm , yup, I would say that your chain was too slack there.
The best thing to have done would be to tighten or better still change the chain before it came off.
I would strongly advise you not to do it again.
My girlfriend could have lost her leg because of you!

I'dve had two instances of such fuck witedness. Once on the hornet (doing maybe 10mph and It went bang, no damage) and once on the sv (it snapped off at ~80mph, sudden loss of power, all it broke was a push rod)

I've been lucky.
