I currently own a 2004 Yamaha DT125RE. I am having some problems with what i think is overheating. If i run the bike for any amount of time the temperature light comes on. If i keep running it like this the bike becomes sluggish and sometimes cuts out and makes a scraping noise. The barrell is red hot at this point.

Does anyone know what is wrong?

I heard it could be the Mixture/Timing or a blocked Radiator/Dodgy water pump. But it is a pretty new bike, just 2004.

You may also want to test if you thermostat is work correctly. Take it out the top of the head and tie a piece of string to it, boil the kettle and fill a mug up and dangle the thermostat in it - after a short time you should see it open. If it doesn't open then it needs to be replaced.

Thats why there is a warning light! if it comes on there is a problem STOP the engine or you will seize the engine. Sounds like you have already had a lucky escape, you may however damaged the engine already.

I would check if there is any water in the system first, if there is then you may have an air lock as Tom m said

More than likely that the thermostat is jammed closed. Do as Ste said with the boiling water. Try cleaning the radiator aswell and checking the whole cooling system for leaks or anything gay like cracks and bulges. Thumbs Up

Ok sorted the problem, there was no Coolant Liquid in the radiator. So i filled it up and gave it a start and the temperature light went off Smile

Now i have another problem, the bike seems to have very low power. And at top end it splutters and really struggles to hit 60!

It never used to do this... This has only happened after this overheat issue, any ideas?

Wouldn't be surprised if you've fucked the gasket running that hot for a while. May need a top end rebuild.

Depending on how long it was at running very high temperatures you may had warped the head or damaged the gasket or plug. Best thing to do would be to strip the top end down and check it all out and replace the stuff mentioned above. Also may be an idea to do the rings while you have the head off.

Could say I told you so...but won't. Wink

Sound like you were on the verge of seizing the engine up. With a stripdown I think you may find a scored barrrel, knackered piston and rings.

Keep an eye on your coolant level too, it shouldn't just dissapear like that, you may have a leak somewhere.

Ok thanks for your help. I am going to hand it in to a motorbike shop and tell them to rebuild the top end.

when you leave it in, be sure to tell them to give you a call when he has it in pieces, just so you can see what needs replacing. Theres a lot of coyboys out there you know, better safe than sorry. At Least tell him to keep the parts for you to see
