I keep getting them whilst riding my bike, and its really anoying me, im getting distracted by the slightest thing, if its somthing on the road, people doing stuff at the side of the road, or even find myself staring at somthing for a second or two, then realising and thinking "if that care broke..."

Im a little stressed atm with insurance claims and what-not, does anyone else have this? its seems to have started after i started riding again when my bike was off road for a week.

and no i dont take drugs.

many thnks, Steve.

Bit of a tough one - easy to just to say pay attention.

Some things that might help are :

1) Make sure you are warm enough - In this weather it's easy to get very cold on your bike. Wear appropriate gear, getting cold can help you lose concentration.

2) Make sure you're not hungry

3) If you find yourself losing concentration do a running commentary on your riding - this will force you to concentrate.

It happens. I think it's a product of being comfortable with your situation... do you get them when you're actually out for a ride (where the sole purpose is a ride) or is it more of a 'while on the way to work like every other day' thing?

Try and make sure that you're leaving yourself enough room to accomodate the 'lapses' and have some faith that your peripheral vision / subconscious are probably keeping track of the things around you that you're not directly concentrating on.

I do this as well. I heard that police drivers/riders are made to do it when they're being tested, like "I'm watching in case the car on the left pulls out, changing road position to see further road the bend" etc It forces them to think more about exactly what they're doing and why.

Commentary is helpful. Started doing after I started running lights by accident and its possible here as you gotta look up as there suspended above your lane which is stupid.

It happens to me all the time. I think it's quite common and ok. Walking home and you get to the front door and can't remember any of the walk even crossing roads. Same on the bike, can't remember massive stretches of road.

Thing that amazed me about police riders was how computer like they where with there knowledge of what we'd just done in the bike safe course. Even looked like he was processing it when we were talking baout it.

It happens to me from time to time, though I have made a big effort not to let it happen when I'm in traffic, having been caught out a couple of times looking at things other than the braking vehicle in front of me. Embarassed

I'd say it's when your brain switches off because it thinks it hasn't anything particularly important to worry about. A lot of the time it doesn't, but on those few occasions when something jumps out at you, you get a shock and if you're unlucky, said thing bites you.

Making a running commentary of what you're doing really focuses your mind and you'll find yourself doing all the lifesavers again, test style, and (probably) riding much better. Laughing It is hard work and not the sort of thing you feel like doing at 8:30 on a frosty, congested morning. Neutral

It's being bored or familiar with the current situation your in, try riding as if your being followed and assessed on your riding skills, that puts my mind back into the right frame. Thumbs Up

its true......

they say that statistically you're more likely to have an accident on roads you know, because your brain thinks its done this many times before and switches off.

well, thats what they say. Of course, accidents also happen more on roads you know because most people spend most of their time on roads they know, but whatever Confused Smile

I get it sometimes when I'm on a road I've ridden on hundreds of times... I'll just stop processing anything and just go with what happens. It'll take a while to register that those big fat red lights on the car in front mean it's braking.

I'll have to third the commentry thing, we were taught it on our CBT if we ever got complacent.. works well Smile

Or be horribly disfigured in a smash. Sad

Your riding is suffering.

Make sure you're not hungry and have had enough water; even if you don't feel thirsty, a glass or two can make a real difference to concentration in my experience.

Sometimes i just go into auto pilot and do my route without thinking, my eyes sort of glaze over. I can arrive home and think "sh1t, i can't remember doing the last 2 miles" it's pretty scarey really. If i'm in auto pilot and the car infront slams on, or something similar i suddenly switch back to normal. Dead weird.
