Hello all

Just wondering how many people have gone down the route of doing their DAS and getting a 600cc bike as their first bike?

If anyone has gone do this route, would they do it the same again if they were starting from scratch, or would you go for a smaller bike and then move up.

I only ask because I have ridden quite a few large Crossers in the past, in the 500cc range and got on fine with them, obviously they are a completely different kettle of fish to sports bikes.

I only ask because, as a christmas pressie from the other half, she very kindly has arranged for me to do my CBT. But i am thinking of maybe just going for my DAS. But I am trying to weigh up what bike I should go with first.

Any help, or experiences would be gratefully received. Thumbs Up

Thanks

How many times did i need to put I only ask? lol

Nope not 600cc, 916cc as my first bike Cool *lol*

If you have the means then do your DAS mate; it would leave you a much wider choice afterwards. If you want a 600cc then get one, long as you can insure it and learn to respect it then you won't get bitten.

Oh and if I had to do it all again I would still buy what I wanted, heart followed by head as they say!

Thumbs Up

Thanks for your reply.

Just wanted to check i wasnt getting carried away and making a huge mistake. lol

Ever since i saw a mate lose control of a peddle and pop, i have respected every bike i have ever got on.

Even if the flash backs of him in a heap with a pedal and pop attacking him made me laugh hysterically.

Get whatever you want to ride. If you're wanting to learn so you can commute to work, get a 500cc commuter. If you're wanting to learn so you can ride a sportsbike, get a sportsbike (600cc or 1000cc)

I got a 750cc everyday type bike and haven't regretted it - and it has the advantage that when I buy a sportsbike as well for summer use only, I'll probably buy a 1000cc bike insteaed of the 600cc bike that I would have been tempted to go for if I was only having the one.

Buying a new bike (with a running in period that I've stuck to) probably helped me to get used to it.

Flash fucker..............if only I could afford one Sad

I have never ridden a bike, did CBT and then DAS a couple of weeks later, passed 2nd time attempt. Money was burning hole in pocket, so splashed out on my ZXR 750.

I dont think it matters what you decide to buy once you've passed the DAS, just ride carefully until 'broken in' and comfortable.

You do have so many more options with the DAS, go for it Thumbs Up

Thankyou all for the advice.

I think i will be going for my DAS then going for a 600cc bike.

Probably Second hand, but the idea of a new bike and using the run in period makes sense. So i might just do the running in period on a second hand bike, so i get used to it.

Once again, thanks for the advice.

if you are young, do CBT and have a 125
if you are 25 or older, do a DAS (maybe 21 cut off wd be ok)

big bikes are quite expensive to insure if you are young but lots cheaper than a car if you are old like me (30)

I turn 27 in March, so thankfully the choice is open.

And you are right the insurance on a bike is loads cheaper than a car. For a car I had a quote of around £980, so a Yamaha R6, the quote was around £650.

I have to admit I was well surprised.

Ianr I think the best route would be do your DAS. That way all options are open to you from the offset.

Might even mean you can start off with a 250cc and move up.

But at least you arent limited as to what you can ride, other than by yourself.

Congratulations on passing brava210! (jammy sod) lol

After many years of "meaning" to learn to ride I finally did something about it at the end of last year. Got myself a CBT and went straight onto DAS. My intention was always to get a 500/600 to commute into London but that I could also use for leisure rides.

Took me a bit longer to pass than I'd hoped (and a bit more ££££) but I would definitely recommend this approach. I got myself a second-hand Bandit 600S (I was looking at new ones but I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I dropped a new bike soon after buying it!!). So I've effectively been doing my initiation on that and I would do the same again!

I took one of the schools 125s for a spin after two DAS lessons on an ER5 and decided that was the last time on a 125 for me!

Go for it Batfink and good luck!
