my bikes simply in the shed, made a U-bolt for it, cut a hole in the bottom, dug the concrete floor out, buried the u-bolt, re concreted it, replaced the wood panel and nailed that down and chain the bike up to that.
im going hell for leather with it cos im going on holiday 2mz! so along with my regular alarm and chain, the spare chains going round the rear wheel to the frame, all 3 disk locks are going on, then going to cover the lot with an old blacket, i mean i dont want her getting cold now do i? |

Are we talking about a specific metal bike storage unit or a normal metal type shed? Plus are we talking about a wooden shed of similar value to a metal bike store?
Wooden shed would be far cheaper so you'd get a cracking shed for the similar price of a metal bike store. You'd also get somewhere dry to work on your bike, store wet kit etc.
Bike specific storage units look great though, and will be far easier to load the bike into as most have a drawer on runners that you simply slide the bike in on.
Metal unit is likely to last far longer, but a well maintained, well made wooden shed should also last a considerable time anyway. Plus, they're easier to repair when it does goes wrong.
I wouldn't disregard the security issue. If built properly the metal unit will be more secure. This might not be an issue now, but you never know where you may be in 5 years time.
Metal unit will hold it value better too if you come to sell it.
Just my initial thoughts.... |

Yes, carpet was me just messing I have seen this metal gridded flooring used in bike lock ups, non slip and easy to clean, definately need something instead of a boring concrete floor. The new home will have a trickle heat to keep it from getting damp and plenty of room to hang the coats and boots etc as the house is starting to look like the local motorcycle shop at the moment! |

Our shed is tiny, once my bike is in there theres only just enough room to get on it and wheel it out. And the roof has begun to get damp and cave in! So Im keeping an eye on that, have noticed that the bike has been damp and wet in the mornings when I have gone to get it out. New concrete building will be built soon I hope, so that we can fit more than one bike in there! ATM the RD is kept in the shed, with the RG and the MBX sat outside underneath a massive 12ft x 8ft cover! ____________________ Honda MBX50 | Yamaha RD125LC | Suzuki RG125F Lucky Strike | Suzuki GSF600S

Its not them getting in that should be worried about, its them being able to get the bikes out (in one peice). I wouldent have put so much glass in it myself, but its not me thats bulding it! ____________________ Will work for petrol

The doors and window are double glazed toughened glass, given to us by a builder brother in law, saved us a few £££ and will be just fine I assure you. They are lockable and the shed itself is located at the bottom of our garden so the bikes are not on show to passers by.
The whole thing has been built properly, on the same princible as a house, damp proofing etc. Being insulated and with trickle heating will keep it from getting damp in the winter, its all been properly planned out. Getting the bikes in and out will be fine, plenty of room, the whole thing is approx 12 feet square, the ground level is yet to come up to just beneath the door level once the patio is completed.
Where the OH's bike lives now is much much smaller and a lot harder to get in and out of, believe me, this new home will be a doddle ____________________ Live on the Isle of Wight and ride a CBR600F |

Yes a good idea mate maybe but think they will be perfectly safe where we live, it would not be easy to get out passed our house in the night on one of the bikes without us knowing ____________________ Live on the Isle of Wight and ride a CBR600F |

Seeing as it's no longer a temporary structure (ie. it's block built) I presume you had planning consent? Or at least looked into it. If it's being wired up, it will now require a certified electrician to sign-off the work as it will require a new seperate breaker on the consumer-unit.
Just a thought if you come to sell the property.
Cladding the building in wood will not disguise it as a shed |
