Rear wheel help, drums gone oval? need a new wheel.

Just had the MOT today.

Just found out that the rear brake has gone funny and its looking at a new wheel or replacement.

Anyone know where I am best looking either new or old.

Its an X reg ER5.

Never heard of that before mate. Not with that kind of mileage anyway!!!! (still less than 25k?)I'd buy one off ebay, cheap enough.

Cheers, i'm looking at about £450 new.

However, i've taken it to another garage, who say there's a possibility it can be reborred(or something simmilar), cost £60 to try. ie they'll take wheel off, tyre off, barings out, drums etc.

Apparently at the MOT centre he said, before they had the computer test it would have gone through.

Ohh also looking on the salvage web sites.

When drum brakes were the norm years ago it was a common occurence, there are specialists still out there that can machine the drum round and true again, though it's easy enough for a general engineering place to do with a Capstan lathe. It's usually only fraction out but enough to stop the brake shoes from making a decent contact.

Yep, you can get the drum skimmed by an engineering company. I would have thought it would cost a lot less than £60 to do it, I see no reason why they would need to remove the tyre to do so either. Try some of the classic bike magazines for adverts, it is even possible to re-line brake drums.

That said, I bought a front wheel for an ER5 off ebay for £35 the other day. You could also try calling round some of the breakers in MCN too, I know front wheels are scarce because people keep falling off and hitting kerbs with them but rears should be plentiful.

Yeahh thanks for all that.

There is one on ebay for £25 with a couple of days to go.

However bike is at place where they will retry and bore it.

You have had the wheel off to measure the drum with a vernier caliper, haven't you? I had a problem with juddery braking with the back, the brake force varying with the rotation of the wheel and the lever not returning properly. Cleaning and lubing everything up which needed it in the rear end sorted it out.

Did both, ended up buying a new wheel.

But got my original re-borred tru'd or whatever they say, whatever it repassed its MOT.

Plus I have a spare wheel, hope I don't ever need it, but at £20 its certainly best to have it spare, rather than £450 new.
