Hi,

I'm going to be giving my car to my sister in the next few weeks. I'm trying to get it as roadworthy as possible as it's a bit tatty at the moment. My only concern at the moment is a 1cm hole in the sill. It's not on the roll ofr the panel, so I cant see it being treated as structural. If I was to bridge it with some mesh and fill, paint etc would that be sufficient for the MOT?

I know they are quite fussy about things like this on the MOT.

i think it will be ok. As long as its not part of the chasis, and its properly covered so there are no sharp bits sticking out !

If you cover it up with something reasonably solid it should pass the mot. (perhaps colour code it so its less obvious) We are allowed to tap sills using a very small hammer Laughing

So mesh should suffice, we are not allowed to dig. Wink

depends, some sills are classed as structural, just bodge it over, rub down flat, paint or underseal it, it can not be scrapped off to check, you can only test what you see, and the tapping with the small hammer is rarely done unless something stands out uneven, or looks dodgy, do a good job they will never notice

Cool. Here's a pic I took a while ago. Oddly enough, it WASNT a hole at the last MOT. When they called to get me to collect it, they said there were some 'issues' and pointed this out. I think they have given it a damn good poke as it wasnt there prior to the MOT. Crafty bastards wont be getting any business out of me again!

probably only cost ya 20 quid for a weld job from mr odd job man, there must be someone you know that does a bit welding, you can rub it back as far as you dare go then fibre glass it, but looking at that i would be careful how hard you rub down, it looks fairly brittle, many a time i started grinding back what was a hole that size, then ended off with one three times bigger

I think it will fail TBH as its on a structural area due to the car being of monocoque design.

Shame your not nearer to me, i'd have welded a plate onto it for ya.
