I am currently 18 and have only a CBT, as such I can ride up to a 125 (14.5bhp) legally, with L plates etc. If I was to purchase a 300 or 400, would it be possible to then restrict it to 14.5bhp in the intermittent period before I manage to pass the A1 test, and still be legal to ride on the provisional license only and with L plates? I'm not sure if it is the actual engine size or bhp that the law works on, and even if it is legal, would anyone advise strongly against doing so for any reason?

When I do pass the A1, would it be easy to remove the restriction, and can anyone predict the approximate cost of restricting and derestricting something along the lines of a Kawasaki KLX300 or Suzuki DRZ400?

I know it all sounds pretty stupid but due to my financial situation and need for transport, I need to know the feasibility of the whole thing- as an option to consider at least.

Thanks in advance,

creak

What he said.

The law states that a learner must not ride a bike of capacity over 125cc or a power over 14.5bhp.

This is because a lot of 125's make more power than that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

iirc, the drz are just bellow the 33bhp limit anyways for when you pass a restricted license. and if the 14.5bhp was law, wouldnt we all be getting r1s and "restricting" them Laughing

aye not very clever at all. what happens if he did get stopped... no insurance, no licence and god forbid had u been speeding when you get pulled. if you didnt get banned you'd get points for sure! Then you'll have to be even more careful cos if you got any more points you'd get banned. Aint worth the risk. Remember just cos hes a police officer doesnt mean he might not know about bikes or even ride himself!
