From what sickpup said and just being back from central I was wondering what people think about couriers?

I personally try to get out there way since it's there job to get places asap. Also seem fairly determined to get through tiny gaps and I genrally feel tense when they're round me. Never that nice to other bikers but guess that goes with the job

Maybe what you consider safe to filter is not what they consider safe.

Maybe they are not as experienced as you.

Be more forgiving and then folk may say, 'I hope to be able to ride like a courier some day.' Laughing

Most bike riders complain about car drivers getting in the way couriers complain about people who can't filter.

If you can't filter no problem. If you stay in the way and hold others up you're a problem.

they seem to swim silently up to the front of traffic whilst i'm floundering about trying to work out which gear i'm in.

you've got to respect 'em though. that job would probably do my head in. It's stressful enough commuting in and out of london (i do) for half an hour in the morning/afternoon let alone all day.

spose it's what you get used to.

there seems to be more brazilians on CG's in soho these days. the british courier might be a thing of the past!

I'm not a courier I'm a possessed GPZ riding female student and the above things piss me off soooo much when I'm late for college and in a rush. Get it more in summer when the plastic fantastic sports bike boys are out and sit in the way just because they can, rarg OUTTA MY WAY!

I also enjoy a good race home, Especially if a bike is ifltering the other side of the traffic to me Twisted Evil game on Mr. Green

huge respect for couriers, some bike cops and others who ride for a living in all weathers, I could do it, I think but don't want to kill my enthusiasm for riding.

No but good money with them, 90p a mile. Stressful circuit to work on though and very clique like.

I was taught to control by such people as Ken James, Nick Raine, Stanley Trowse, Paul (whatever the fuck his name is). This little lot along with Mike who owns Fleetway are the the people who back in the day were the first courier controllers at Addy lee. Some of the first and finest ever bike controllers.

Hold on chaps, is there a courier clique forming here?

My favourite Courier Story

I was travelling down the A40 heading into London one evening during rush hour. There was a lot of traffic and there isn't much filter space between the lines of traffic.

About four or five of us were doing our best but there really wasn't much progress being made.

Up from behind me comes this rather irate courier, obviously in a big hurry and honking his horn. As soon as I could, I pulled over and let him through, as did the two bikes in front of me.

At the very front, however, was a big fuck off biker, built like a brick shit-house and riding a big BMW. He decided that the courier was being a rude wee shite, but also he had nowhere he could go.

After five minutes we come to a red light and we all get to the top of the queue and fan out across the two lanes of traffic. The courier pulls up on the left of Beamer man and starts shouting abuse at him for not letting him through. Beamer man stretches out left arm and pushes the courier who, unfortunately for him, had his right foot on the ground rather than his left.

Courier slowly falls over with bike, lights go green and the rest of us pottered off. Karma

I'm sure his language was even more ripe after we left! Mr. Green

I know all about the A40, it's a real bugger at times.

Even when I have to use the A40 heading out from London I do the best I can to filter, I often pull over to let other bikes go past so I don't get some other courier giving me a hard time.

Rumour has it that Malcolm Young the boss managed to clear his overdraft and the pissed off bank then removed it leaving him with no spare change to pay the riders and drivers so a VERY quick sale happened.

Had a job interview at Young's for a fleet manager position a couple of years ago and it was a waste of time. They had 80+ bikes most of which were off the road due to bad maintenance schedules and parts thefts (suggested by staff). The manager I had an interview with was rarely at the office, generally on the golf course. He asked what I could do for the company, my least favourite question to which I replied I could keep his fleet running and make a profit by implementing proper mantenance procedures and schedules. Didn't get the job and a month or two later they had to abandon the bike fleet at a great financial loss.

They also had a second city office in Redchurch St E2 just around the corner from my house. They didn't get planning permission for the business type though so were about to be booted out by the council.

One of my proudest moments was managing to bring the A40 at Gypsy corner to a total standstill for nearly 45 minutes. Parking a GT750 in the back of a Maestro at ~70mph is not advised. Bike and I did some kind of cartwheel apparently (I woke up in Chiswick hospital on a spinal board, last thing I remember was pulling out of the Shell garage by the flyover, fucked if I can remember the roads down there now) and came to a halt a goodly few yards down the road.

Nicely put by the way Sickpup, there's nothing quite so irritating as being POB and stuck behind some idiot in rush hour traffic who simply will not let you through to get on with the job. It's not a race, it's not a macho thing, it's simply that someone who is on their bike for 10-14 hours a day in heavy traffic will be going faster than most. As a dizzy I have nothing to prove, what I do have is a wage to earn.

Bish, when were you dizzying around Birmingham? I was on the road up here until around 3 years ago (and for the 6 before that).

i commutte 167 mile a day into london and after 2 years i still love the filtering/lights grand prix Very Happy . i do the A3 route to london bridge though. Managed 1hr 13 mins from bank to gosport on a deauville, lol.

funniest thing i`ve see.

filtered to the front and can see another bike following so i move to give him room. The old classic bike with straight pipes comes along side and backfires.

well i look at him and say "hey that sounds nice". He turns his head away from me. ok i thought.

Lights went green and he got the drop on me Sad i was suprised how fast away it was.

200M on the next set of lights. stupid me says the same "nice bike". to which he turns his head away. this guy ooks about 50ish.

ok i thought i beat ya then, pulled away and both level till the final set of lights on the stretch.

Right i`m not having this as the thing people do not know about the deauville is its really good up to 40mph. its a v twin that you can not wheelie ever!.

So i dial in 7krpm and wait for green, you can see this guy looking out his visor at me. bang off we go. i get about 2 bikes length on him, max out 1st then back off beacuse of traffic ahead.

twat on old bike goes for second and zooms past with a grin, he look forward, does a double take, throws the anchor out and stops wedged between 2 cars. and i mean stuck. He was shacking and white, i pulled along side and filter right laughing like a clown.

anyone got anymore stories.
