Hi i am 15 and soon to be 16 and have started to save. The bike i have in mind is a Rs50 and despite what people are saying about the engines going BANG i have decided that it is the bike for me to get some on the road experiance with. Has anyone any ideas about how much i should spend, what mileage not to go over when buying and things to look out for when looking around the bike.
Sorry for the story
thanks
Tam

Hi

The engine is used in loads of other geared 50s.

Price wise we went round looking at them for a neighbour a year or 2 ago. They seemed to drop £500~£1000 in price immediatly from new and then hold their value. Didn't seem to be any real cheapies around as even a cosmetically tatty one with an MOT and mechanically OK condition seemed to be around £800.

Think the biggest thing to watch out for with a 2nd hand one is owner abuse.

All the best

Keith

Hi,

Firstly, think your mad going for an RS, but less mad for not buying new like my dad did Shocked

You can find plenty of low mileage ones that way your the one doing most the mileage on it, although that said an engine can still be abused in the first 500miles before it's run in,

Kickstart is right the same engine is used in lots of geared 50s, infact almost all of them apart form the husqvarna.

Wouldn't advise on spending alot of money, dispite the horror stories it is a fairly robust 2t engine.

Don;t buy the first one you see, dont rush into buying one and look everywhere

not a bad little bike mate. i agree on £1000-£1500 for a decent one. try and get one that has done under 5000miles.

Get a 2nd hand twist n go, or a 2nd hand geared bike like a TS 50/DT 50 ect. Or wait till your 17 and get a 125 and do your A2 test.

Anyone who spends £1700 on a poxy 50 is fuggin nuts imo.

we spent £1600 on the RX50, it was used for a year offroad, a year by me on the road when i was 16, my dad used it for 9 months on the road and up the farm (rounding sheep up Laughing ) Brother then had it on the road for what would have been a year but ended up being 2months before being stolen.
So not nuts, not at all, very sensible.

However £2350 plus insurance on the RS50... I think is something my dad could be committed to an asylum for Shocked

An old 2nd hand yammy dt 50/ suzuki TS 50 would have done all that, for a whole lot less i imagine aswell.

Can pick them up well cheap, insurance is cheap as its an old bike, and they last forever aswell. Wink

The only problem with them, is like most offroad style bikes, they get stolen a lot.

yes but we had the bike from new, cared for it and loved it, dad wanted to keep it long turn as his pootle about tool as the farm is a mile from our house and the RX was a mean tool on the farm and a lot cheaper than the navara which is a gas guzzling beast.

plus the RX new was v cheap for what it was, It had a warranty, it was MOt free for the first 3 years (not that it lived that long since its now been crushed into a tiny cube Crying or Very sad )

It was more modern and upto date than a DT50 or TS

Ive had lots of bikes since, and I still think the 50 was the best bike I've had.
If it wasnt for my brother when he turned 16 I would have certainly stuck a 125 aprilia Engine in it and carried on.
