Well I've found a beautiful 2001 R6 which I'm in a position to buy but my hopes have been shattered by some of the quotes I've just gotten! I just did a few quotes all they all came over £1500 TPFT. One place even quoted over £3500 for fully comp.

I'm 21 0 NCB and 3 points so I expected it to be a bit expensive but not that much surely? My 250 bandit is only £230 TFPT.

I've noticed a few of you about my age and experience who have R6s and was wondering how much you pay and if its less than what I've been quoted please can you give me a link Thumbs Up

With your experience and those points, it will be expensive. Go TPO and shell out on a decent lock and ground anchor.

Try getting quotes after
1. Fixing a category 1 alarm/immobiliser.
2. Chain + ground anchor.
3. If you have parents or relatives living in good post codes, try giving that as your home address.
4. Garage the bike.
5. Offer to pay a higher excess in exchange for a lower premium.
6. Try a voluntary low mileage option.
7. See if they will decrease it, if you opt out of taking pillions.

Ps: These suggestions may be far from ideal and may affect claims, but if you are really desperate to get on the road on a R6, they may be worth a try.

Were those quotes online? If they are try ringing up as you may be surprised the difference between the online quote and the ring up quote.

In my case the difference was £400!!

It's gonna be expensive. Basically, young new rider + R6 = very likely claim. Shop around a bit, you'll probably get it down a bit, but it still won't be very cheap i'm afraid!

If you just switch the policy over to an R6, the hike will be lower than what you would pay for a new quote.

I was quoted £350 for a cagiva planet 125 tpo, but it was free to switch my insurace from my scooter (£189 tpo). That's a fairly healthy saving.

If you've still got insurance woes, think about buying a rarer bike. The rarer the bike, the cheaper the insurance.

2 quotes from experience: £380 for a cagiva mito, £1169 for an aprilia rs125, same power, same year, same value, same insurance group.

I did this, and my premium reduced by £200
currently paying £760tpft on a GPZ500s 3 claims, clean license no no claims. and im 18 living in a crap area of coventry.

just keep ringing round companies, lie if you have to when asked about what your cheapest quote is,

I seemed to hit a wall at a grand tpft, but then I tried lying and got £820 down to £760, then I gave up...and ran out of companies to ring.

sounds like a bit of a killer mate!

phoning up is always better and cheaper so ive found!

only problem i can suggest as i also had this problem, anything 2000 or newer my insurance was pushing over the 1k mark!

i got a 1998 zx6r with all the alarms, immobilisers etc!

im paying £459 TPFT, bearing in mind im only 18, got 2yncb though!

my mate has an 2001 R6 and he ended up paying £1200 tpft with 3 points on his liscense at 18!

i would try some quotes with different bikes and different year models and see the difference!

Cheers for the tips guys Thumbs Up Paid for the bike today and im collecting it on wednesday so I got til then to phone as many people as possible. Very Happy

Bring back the days when Danny was it? from this forum would do all the hard work for you and find the best quote all for a very resonable price.

Used https://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk/ thanks to a link in another thread and got it down to £733TPFT but thats without trying some of those tips.

Also Yokogeri recommend motorcycle direct who sound very resonable so gonna have to give them a call.

Anyway wish me luck as the hunt starts and hopefully I can get a resonable price, if not it looks like I'll be spending a few more hours at the office to pay for it all!

I second that recomendation, they've been the cheapest for me on a few occasions.

Motorcycle direct, Lexham and Carole Nash seemed to be the three best insurers for me. I don't think bennetts liked me on account of my age. By the way, don't visit www.bennets.com - the insurer's website is www.bennetts.com
