PostPosted: 22:38 - 01 Feb 2006    Post subject: The first bike - NSR - help? Reply with quote

Hey, new to these forums, joined up as am scouring anything and everything to do with bikes at the moment. I turned 17 in december, but have been hankering for a bike for well over a year and a half now. I started an apprenticeship a while back, and have found my £115 a week is really beneficial! lol Nowhere near minimum wage, but oh well.
Although Ive never owned a bike, I can ride my dads 550 pretty well, and I know enough about bikes in general, Id just like opinions, feedback, or even warnings, about the NSR, as its a large coice for me.
Right, back to bikes.

I am absolutely in LOVE with the NSR 125, its such a shame they stopped making them Sad Im looking to get a second hand nsr at a dealer, so finance is available. Money isnt really a problem, although I dont want to spend more than £2000 on the bike. I just wanted some opinions, if thats alright, on the NSR 125, and what parts are like etc, if anyone knows. Thanks very much for any response

My NSR has always been very reliable, its also quick (faster than my mates RS125). It also looks a lot better than the other 125s, Mito excepted.
Highly recommended.

Out of the 125 sports replicas people generally go for, ie the Honda NSR, the Aprilia RS 125 and the cagiva Mito the honda is probably the cheapist on parts and the most cost effective all round. You will get some contrasting veiws no doubt as there are a fair few RS owners on here. But, if you think about it, Honda are proven to be very reliable, parts are readily available and at much cheaper prices. There is about 10 miles an hour difference between the models and I can say from my own personal experience that the NSR never let me down. I had it for about 18 months and other than the general up keep, oils, chain, blah blah is was 18 months of hassel free riding. Shop around and find one that has been well looked after even if it may cost you that little bit extra or have to go that little bit further a feild for, it will be worth it.

Go for it!

Attached is my (ex) NSR. I do miss her still cos she was one sexy mo fo!

Welcome to the Forum.

I've had mine for just over a year and I've not had any major trouble/gripes with it.

They're pretty easy to work on and parts are readily avaliable from either David Silver Spares or CMP racing.

You'll get a near new condition bike for less than 2000, just make sure you get all the Original parts if they've tarted it up.

i got my black and silver 2002 model for 2100, never had a problem (apart from the battery, kept going flat) its great fun, if you get a standard one you may want to put smaller indicators on as the standard ones are kind of large (HUGE)

Great responses! Thanks very much to everyone, all of your bikes look absolutely stunning. Im off to look at a 2003 Nsr at my local dealer on monday, I heard somewhere that these cant be derestricted? Does anyone know about that for definite?

This has made me want the NSR even more, with all the positive feedback. Thanks everyone, its very much appreciated.

2003 can be derestricted, the same way as shown on www.nsr125.com this has a derestriction guide on it.

If it's a 2003 it's probably an import... Can be derestricted, but harder to do, as it's done through electronics and stuff...

this is the general thing with the race rep 2t.

mito + rs125 - fastest, but generally seem to require more looking after

nsr - has honda's reliability, generally last longer and need less looking after, slightly less power than the rs/mito.

there realy is very little between them, apart from looks, and ever so slightly the riding positions and dimensions.

Check out nrsfreak on bike pics - he's got a '97 nsr. It is the sexiest nsr ever. (i'll try and get the url for you)

I considered getting one, but the top fairing is puny, and it doesn't have USDs. I hate normal forks.

All 2-strokes are as reliable as each other provided they are maintained, but honda will be the easiest to get parts for by quite a bit. The mito is cheaper on insurance, though.

No prob.

A UK spec will be easier to derestrict when you are ready for a little more power. Twisted Evil
