Hi

I have my theory booked for next week and will be booking my das for next month.
What do you think is a good bike for about £1500?

I'm looking for a reliable fairly quick bike that handles well.

Thanks

Mark

they are diddy, and you may find em a bit peaky for day to day. I did. I found them cramped too, i'm 6'1". Nice bikes but more for thrashing. ZZR600 or Cat would be far better choices if commuting, and long motorway trips are to be contemplated.

tbh the bike will only be used at weekends as I don't need any vehicle for work so will be doing low miles

VFR would be better for hooning then, but beware they are utter bastards ifa anything enginewise goes wrong.

Have you budgeted for insurance? If you decide on a sportsbike I would get quotes before committing to buy as, depending on your age, the prices could make your hair stand on end.

I would steer clear of 400's if you can, get a thundercat. They will be alot more reliable, a hell of a lot quicker and probably cheaper insurance. They look pretty cool too. Thumbs Up

VFR400s are imports, its not so much the parts-you can get the spares for them. They are just a pig to work on, engine wise anyway.

I'd suggest getting a 600 really as you will probably epand your biking horizons and 400s are really learning machines (ill probably get haranged for this)

Agreed stay clear of 400's. Most are old in age and if not old, then old in design. There is also the risk that a lot of the older ones are clocked.

A thundercat though might be a bit expensive if the budget is £1500. A CBR certainly so as they hold their value and so you would end up having a much older bike for the same money. Plus both the older CBR's and the Cat are quite 'squishy' on the handling front being designed more for comfort.

Now obviously they are no sports 600 and play stops at 130mph but we are talking about a first bike here and as an SV fan I think you could do a lot worse than get a nice curvy SV650s as a first bike. You will find lots at more your level of budget.(ebay would be a good place to start) Great fun, good handling, very quick acceleration up to 100 (due to the sports 600 level of torque) and best of all very cheap insurance which for a first bike when you have zero no claims will be very high on your list.

Other option's might be a 500... just don't expect handling to enter the equation there. The GPZ500s is the better of that class but it's still not brilliant. Reliable and fairly quick yes. You will almost certainly do your DAS on an ER-5 or CB500 and in some ways, especially if you find you are no natural, it can pay to carry on your 'learning' on a simular bike once you have passed your test.

I'd recomend a Honda CB-1 or Superfour - very good examples can be picked up for less than a grand and make fantastic first big(ish) bikes.

Yeah I have a couple of years ncb's as I had a little 50cc ad now I have a 125cc.
I'm 24 so insurance should be ok, I did a quote on a bandit, this one (2nd one down): https://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/bikes_search.asp?nU=0&make=SUZUKI&model=ANY&ccappr=600&min_pr=75&postcode=BH8%208JN&miles=40&max_records=50&modelexact=1&photo=1

I was pleasently supprised about the quote it came out at £160 tpft

that bandit seems a little over priced to me. I gue3ss it would be as its in auto trader. I'll put a vote in for a bandit 400, they are physically big bikes and i actually think nicer looking than the 600's.

Banditmania.com do loads of spares for it too.
