Me and my mate just rode from near Swindon down to the beach at Weston-Super-Mare. About a 60 mile trip. The first half of the trip was a real laugh but from Bristol down to Weston there wasn't one stretch of road without a limit on! 50 was the fastest you were allowed to go. It wasn't even in reasonable places: dead straight dual carriageways = 50MPH. Am i the only one who thinks councils are starting to go a bit OTT with speed limits everywhere. Oh well, nice fish & chips when we got there.

was there residential buildings on the side(s) of the dual?
if so the limit may not have been desided on the safe speed of the road but the noise from the road traffic.

No, no houses or anything thats why i couldn't understand it. I understand the need for it if there is a risk of anything happening but this was a dead straight dual carriageway in the middle of nowhere. (well, between Bristol and Weston Wink ) The rest were all A roads, about 25 miles worth. All with limits

not too sure about 50 limits on dual carriageways near you but 50 limits have been introduced on many A roads that have had bad accidents and fatalities around here

the dual carriageways with a 50 limit local to me are in built up areas
that's the usual case

I know i cant realy talk about speeding, as i cant go over 50mph.

But if there is a limit of 30 or under i generally stick to it.

More than 30 and i just rag the nuts off the bike.

I work in the weston area, the A370 into weston on those dual carriage ways do have residential estates on the one side, on the other side of the carriage way they have a cycle path and there is also a pedestrian crossing, so it makes sence for it to be 50.

I think it was the A4174; but you're probably right. Anyway, the rest of the roads all had limits on and not all of them needed limits.

It always amuses (well, puzzles) me the way they put 50 limits on the well-travelled good condition roads and then keep the NSL on the single lane cart tracks leading off the main road. Laughing The A6 from Matlock to Buxton and indeed the Cat & Fiddle road spring to mind, as does the road across the top of the village where I live.

Since I crashed at the junction onto the main road, they've introduced a 40 limit on the section of main road running through the village. It very probably was needed, there are a number of very bad blind junctions which make it very difficult to see if anything is coming until the last minute - more so when they're doing 60+. However, there is a treacherous little road (gravel, potholes and tractors included) leading from the main road with maximum forward visibility of about 20 feet and barely enough room for one cars width which is a NSL. Confused They went to the effort of posting it as a NSL too, rather than just keeping it the same as the 40.

Local council bureaucracy >= common sense.

I was proposing the logic which they seem to apply to the situation, meaning, in a mongrel sense perhaps, that the bureaucracy is given greater importance than common sense.
