Just thinking ahead a bit here, but I want to move onto a bigger bike from my current Honda XR 125 sometime this year (haven't even passed my test yet!). I'm 17 (18 in May) and have been riding since I passed my CBT last August.

I'm not really sure what bike to go for though!

The Kawasaki GPZ500 has caught my eye, but the lack of a full fairing puts me off a bit (although I think you can get them added on?). The ZXR400 looks very nice but I'll be using the bike every day as my main form of transport so I'm not too sure on the comfort of them (the riding position is a lot more "racing-like" if it's anything like my Dads' ZX-9R). I'm not really sure if a 600cc is gonna be too much in terms of cost and being not so good restricted etc. A ZX-6R is likely to have huge insurance and I'm not really sure whether I could afford it!

I won't be needing a lot of speed, I'd be happier with a bike that get's up to 70 really fast and a top speed of 90 than one which goes 130 but takes half a year to get to 70. This makes me think maybe a 600cc could be too much? (remembering it will be restricted for 2 years). But then all the best bikes seem to be 600's (much more choice) and I suppose you can't really have "too much" power Smile .

Any suggestions on what bike?

Yep. You can never have too much power Wink

500cc insuracne would be cheapest as well as to buy the bike i think.

How much would you be willing to spend?

Well I'd preferably like to spend about £1500 (not including insurance) but I don't know how far that will get me. Prerably I would spend under that though Wink . Seen some GPZ500's on Biketrader that are pretty good for around that price.

I think the best looking 500's are probably the GPZ's, although a little dated looking. Thumbs Up

Keep looking around and the right bike will pop up Thumbs Up

Pretty much all bikes can be restricted. 2 strokes don't really like the standard carb disk restrictors.

From looking at your other thread and being suggested a bandit you might have problems with insurance. I'm 19 with 1NCB and I'm paying just over £350.

For a 17 year old just passed I'd expect that to be nearer £600/700

Unless you're Jon B and slept with the insurance company MD.

Thought of an ER-5? Takes restriction well, cheap to buy, cheap to insure, still fun to ride.

Just to make you aware I had a vfr400 restricted to 33bhp and I went to elvington and was being beaten by a few none restricted bikes that didnt need to be restriceted because they never had more than 33bhp in the first place. they were, a cbr250, goose350 and even a NSR125 (proper race one).

May be a better option for you while you are on your 33bhp restriction. should save you money on insurance aswell.

Well after some more looking around I've decided that I don't really like the GPZ500 anymore, you're right about it looking dated.

I would really prefer something in a similar style to a ZXR or a YZF (i.e. Sports bike style) rather than something like the CB500. I think for that though I definitely need to increase my budget. Would something closer to £2k get better results for such a bike?

Also, I would definitely consider a 250cc, it doesn't NEED to be a 400 or higher. It's just I'm having trouble finding any 250's for sale?

Thanks again.

i have a 1993 400 bandit V and to be honest the only way to can tell its restricted is its top end speed, it handles well and parts are easy to find, insurance was a piece of piss,
17 yrs old,
0 NCB
no security devices
and it was an extra wallet bursting £30 to bring it to £330 all in, with carole nash,
