If I buy a bike that was declared off road do I have to declare it off road myself once the bike is in my name?

If I do then I may be screwed as I haven't done anything about it since I tried to tax it online today. It said

"Previous Tax Disc or SORN declaration expired on: 20 11 2005"

But I have a document from the previous owner saying its sorned till Feb this month.

So do I have to pay the ruddy fine?

BTW it has been off road since I bought it.

Tax it yourself, and throw anything requesting a fine in the bin. The odds are then that you won't hear anything more about it. Of course, that is only my personal recommendation and the consequences of such rampant, dangerous and civilisation threatening lawbreaking are yours to take. Very Happy

So far as I am aware, the SORN system works in the same manner as the normal vehicle licencing (road tax) and is independent of the registered keeper system. As you can buy vehicles with tax on and not have to re-tax them until the tax elapses, I would think that the SORN becomes your responsibility when it elapses, whether it was notified by you or not.

personally keep hold of that sorn document the last owner gave you, just take your mot insurance and v5 down the post office and tax it..............i would not of thought anything would come from it but you never know, but if it does you have the sorn document to shove up their rectum, i personally thought that they would write to you again asking if the vehicle was to be sorn again or taxed, but saying that i have not received a road tax reminder for my pick up, only owned it for 3 years apparently quite a few people have failed to receive reminders, so the nice lady at the post office tells me...................

Thanks for the replies I'll have to wait until the insurance starts and then see what happens.
